When Liatroim
Fontenoys led Ballycran by 1-5 to two Catherine
McGourty points at half-time in the Down Senior
Camogie Championship final in St Malachy’s Park,
Castlewellan, they would have been expected to
easily collect their 14th consecutive title with
ease.
However, the Ards side upped the tempo considerably
during the second half and Cáitríona McCrickard
needed to keep a cool head to fire over a last
second point from a 45 to allow the Fontenoys
to hold on to their crown.
The game was intense throughout and riddled with
frees and stoppages. But on a surface which did
not allow for free-flowing camogie Cáitríona rose
above those conditions to play a major part in
the Liatroim success.
She had scored the first half goal and then flicked
a long free to the net at the start of the second
as it looked to be turning into a canter for the
holders.
However, Ballycran substitute Sinéad Dorrian fired
home two excellent goals, and points from Catherine
McGourty and Mary Gilmore tied the game as it
entered injury time.
In stepped McCrickard to halt the comeback and
put Liatroim through to the Ulster Club Championship
where they will meet the Donegal champions in
mid August.
