Ulster Junior Championship Final: Down v Derry

Down our now the Ulster Junior Camogie Champions. It was the hat trick from Karen Gribben that secured the title for the Mourne ladies as they defeated Derry at Ballycran on Sunday 20 June 2004 for the first time in 13 seasons.

Playing against the wind, Down's Maírín McAleenan shot the first point of the game within 2mins of commencement. This was followed by another point from Cathy Mulholland. Halfway through the first half, the Mourne Camogs and the Ladies from the Oak Leaf County were level but it was a superb goal from Karen Gribben that put Down into the lead. The ever determine Derry side fought back by scoring a goal. The two sides were level once again. Goals supplied by Katherine McGourty and Karen Gribben secured Down's lead 3-4 to1-5 at half time.

The defence line throughout the first half fought continuously against the Derry side with the Anne Morgan and Deborah Kelland endlessly under pressure against the strong Derry side.

Substitutions were made at this stage with Fionnaula Carr coming on for Mary Gilmore and Brenda Gallagher for Angeline Fearon.

Derry's Katie McCauley, opened the start of the second half with a goal. From a superb sideline pass supplied by Fionnaula Carr, Down's Karen Gribben scored her hat trick. In the 56min of the game Derry received a penalty and again Katie McCauleys shot found the back of the net. Down was feeling the pressure as Derry threw everything they had at them but Down's Theresa McGowan, Moya Maginn and Clare McGovern played audaciously to ensured that the Oak Leaf county could not supply further points.

The Mourne Camogs increased their lead with points supplied from McAleenan and Fionnaula Carr with the final point from Cathy Muholland, thus securing Down as the new Ulster Junior Camogie Champions.
