Down got their Ulster junior championship campaign off to a winning start yesterday with a 3-14 to 1-4 over the reigning Ulster Junior champions Armagh in Ballycran yesterday.

The Orchard county who reached the All-Ireland junior semi-final last year were a goal up after five minutes thanks to Patricia Mc Avoy (Avoy)but the girls from the Mournes replied three minutes later with their opening goal and they never looked back after that. Things wer looking rosy for Down manager Bernie Mc Nally at the break as down led 2-6 to 1-4.

A solid Down defense denied the Orchard girls as much as a point in the second half while an own goal from the Armagh 'keeper spelt disaster for the defending Ulster champions. Down now go on to meet Derry who defeated London 2-14 to 0-5 in Ruislip on Saturday. A much better London performance than other years they kept the Oak Leaf County to 2-6 to 0-1 at the break, the two goals coming from Katie Mc Auley and Michelle Comer. London sent over a further 0-4 in the second period but Derry were always too sharp up front for them.

The only other Ulster Junior championship match saw a very spirited Tyrone side over come Cavan in Ballyhaise 4-10 to Cavan's 2-7.

Meanwhile Waterford gave one of the best performances in recent years when they ran Limerick juniors to 5-11, Waterford 3-10 at the Gaelic grounds on Saturday night in the Munster Junior championship semi-final. Firm favorites Limerick were behind 3-8 to Waterford's 3-9 with eight minutes remaining. However, Limerick's extra experience shaded it with two late goas within the final two minutes from Carol Hickey and Dympna O'Brien.

Limerick will now meet Cork in the Munster Junior championship final on July 7th following their 8-23 whitewashing of Tipperary in the second semi-final. The Rampant rebels were well always in control with Emer O'Farrel netting a hat trick of goals.
