All-Ireland Crown for Down Camogie
"Camogie Centenary Golf Classic"

Billed 'officially' by the Camogie Association as the 'Camogie Centenary Golf Classic', it was considered to be Camogie's own golf 'All-Ireland' by the 40 odd teams who participated at the Gowran Park course in Kilkenny last Friday (9th July)....with the reputations of the good and the great at stake.

Teams of four came from every county in Ireland and more besides. Amongst the fancied runners were the big hitters of...Cork, Kilkenny and Tipperary while Wexford, tipped by many this year to perhaps make the Senior Camogie final in September, more than looked the part! Also, there were couple of dark horses in the field notably the teams from the Irish Sports Council - led by Irish Soccer legend Niall Quinn - and the GAA team with President Sean Kelly at the helm.

However, it was the team from Down Camogie, with 94 points, that grabbed the headlines and claimed the honours of the day...and that title of "Camogie All-Ireland Golf Champions".

The Down team, led by current County Manager Bernie McNally, along with former Down Camogie Development Office Paul Welsh, Siobhan Skates and Patricia O'Brien just edged out the Michael Cleary inspired Tipperary by a single shot.

Naturally Bernie McNally was delighted with the result. "It was just a fantastic day. We all played some good golf and had great craic in the process. We though when we came in at the end that we might have a chance of a prize with 94 points but to win is just unbelievable. It's great really when you think that there were so many counties represented on the day along with the GAA and others...in essence it really was an All-Ireland of sorts and we're proud that we won if for Down."
