Down camogie
team commenced the National League campaign in
triumphant style with a victory over Meath at
the Killyon grounds. In the first minutes Mairin
McAleenan scored two points after being set up
by Katrina Fegan.
This was
followed by a superb goal from Mairin, ably assisted
by Mary Gilmore and Leona Ferris. It was 15minutes
before Meath registered a score but slack defending
by Down allowed Meath back into the game. The
score at half time was Down 1-5 to Meath 0-3.
The second
half began with the defence beginning to play
like a unit with Cathy Mulholland, Moya Maginn
and substitute Orla Maginn clearing some good
goals. After a foul on the goalkeeper, Teresa
McGowan launched a long free to the forward line
where Brenda Faloona collected and sent over a
point. Further scores were added by Mairin McAleenan,
Mary Gilmore and Catherine McGourity who was operating
as a third midfielder.
Overall
this was promising display by a new squad of girls
after a shaky start. Player of the match: Mairin
McAleenan.
Down's
next fixture will be at home against Kildare on
March 28, venue to be arranged.
