History
of Tullylish
The Laurencetown Club, which in the
Sixties adopted the parish name Tullylish, was launched
on July 17th, 1944 in the Bann School. The first Chairman
was Tom Armstrong with Charles Monaghan and Larry
McCartan acting as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
The club was named St. Patrick's and the playing field
which was on Chapel Hill, was named Shamrock Park.
War time restrictions posed many
problems for the infant club but the hard work of
many dedicated officials ensured that the club not
only survived but continued to progress during the
ensuing decades. Tullylish teams have been moderately
successful over the years supplying many members at
various levels to Down teams.
The club is particularly proud of
the fact that three of it's players hold All-Ireland
Senior medals. The club has also supplied many administrators
to the G.A.A. Names like Dick McConville, South Down
Secretary, Billy Byrne, Co. Treasurer and Paddy McFlynn,
President of the Association spring readily to mind.
In 1979 the club purchased and developed
it's own playing field and has since, on the same
site, erected spacious social rooms which provide,
a useful centre for community activities.
