Ballyvarley Hurling Notes Week of
18th April 2006
This
coming week Ballyvarley’s
under 14
hurlers get their season underway.
They have training on Wednesday 19th
April at 5.45pm
at
Ballyvarley field before they go to
the Feile
on Saturday 22nd April in
Castlewellan
.
To
get to the
Feile
players are asked to be at
Ballyvarley pitch on Saturday at 10am
sharp, to be transported to
Castlewellan
for 11am
. The
Ballyvarley
Under 14s will play all their
games on the Bann Road Pitch before you come into
Castlewellan
. The youmg
hurlers play four games:
Kilclief
(at
11.20am
),
Newry (
12.20pm
),
Warrenpoint (
1.00pm
) and
finally
Clonduff at 1.40pm
. The
top two go into the final.
The
Feile is
a great day to promote hurling, one
the young hurlers enjoy, and we
would encourage as many parents as
possible to help transport them to
the event.
Coaching still continues every
Saturday for the under 10 and 12s at
11am
at St
Patrick’s College Banbridge.
The
Under 16 hurlers are well into their
season. They comprehensively beat
Castlewellan
in Derryleckey
on Monday on a
scoreline of 4-11 to 1-2, and
on Saturday they narrowly lost by a
goal to
Clonduff
. The second stage of the league
will start after a short break.
This
year Ballyvarley and Ballela are
joined at Minor level, with the first game in the minor league scheduled for Monday 24th
April.
Ballyvarley seniors had their first
league match last week, and with a depleted squad they lost away to Warrenpoint. Their next game is
away to Bredagh
on Tuesday 25th April
(throw in at
7 pm
),
followed by a home game on Tuesday 2nd
May against Newry Shamrocks.
Under 16 Hurling League
Ballyvarley Vs
Castlewellan
Ballyvarley’s Under 16
hurlers continued their winning
streak with a comprehensive win over
Castlewellan
in Derryleckey
.
Playing in good conditions
Ballyvarley began the stronger,
their first score coming with a neat
point from the far right wing from
Tony Hegarty
.
Conor
McClorey
was dominating for the Reds at
Half-forward and five minutes in
he soloed
through, broke past his markers and
scored a great goal.
Castlewellan
were on the back foot and as
Ballyvarley kept pressing, Paul
O’Neill went on a mazy run before
lifting the net. Paul added three
more points from frees, as he, James
McDermott and
Conor
McClorey dominated that
diamond in the centre of the field.
Castlewellan did come more
into it though, and as the half drew to a close they had a seven minute spell
of sustained pressure. The
Ballyvarley rearguard battled well
to clear their lines with
Paul Cairns and
Colm Madden holding firm and
James McDermott putting in a heroic
effort. So for all their pressure
Castlewellan
managed just a solitary point from David Morgan, but the impetus swing back in favour of the
Reds as
Conor
McClorey
soloed in
twiced
to add to more points to the
scoreline
.
HALF-TIME: Ballyvarley 2-
7
Castlewellan
0-1
Leading by twelve points
it would be easy for the Ballyvarley
team to ease off in the second half,
and it seemed like they were when
Castlewellan
goaled just after the restart.
Buoyed by the goal, the away team
pressed for more scores, but both
Colm
Madden and Paul Cairns made timely
clearances under some heavy tackles.
Then Ballyvarley won a
free 40 yards out. Paul O’Neill
drove a long high shot that evaded
everyone and dropped into the net.
This score deflated and ended the
Castlewellan
challenge. Despite having to remove some players with injuries and replace others with blood subs, the Reds controlled the remainder with some fine scores.
One of these came from
Tony Hegarty
. A delivery from Jamie Murray
rolled along the ground around the
14 yard line, and Tony turned and
pulled on it first time to goal.
There was still time for Paul
O’Neill to drive from midfield and
slot over three more points, with Castlewellan getting one in reply.
FULL-TIME: Ballyvarley 4-
11
Castlewellan
1-2
This was a commanding
performance from Ballyvarley.
Michael McDermott was safe in goal;
Paul Cairns and
Colm Madden strong at the
back, Sean Savage and Tony
Hegarty
lively upfront. However, James
McDermott, Paul O’Neill and
Conor
McClorey
were really on top form, all three
putting in immense games.
Special mention and thanks
to all those who transported the
players to the game.
