Ballyvarley Under 12 hurlers got
their league campaign off to a good
start with a battling win over Warrenpoint
at Ballyvarley on Saturday. Maurice
McGrath and Conal McNally set the
tone with good work in midfield
which was rewarded with an early
long range goal from Maurice. A
long range point from Chris Lennon
increased the Red’s advantage
early on. At the other end of the
pitch Kieran McShane and Ryan McKay
were keeping all Warrenpoint threats
at bay with fearless tackles and
good clearances. Mid way through
the first half Warrenpoint got their
first point which was quickly answered
by another fine point from Maurice
McGrath. Warrenpoint kept the pressure
on with a scrambled goal but again
the Red’s responded when Eoin
McConville crashed the ball to the
back of the Warrenpoint net and
Chris Lennon scored a goal from
the fifty. Cormac Lennon put in
some great tackles to prevent further
breaches on the Ballyvarley line
while Finbar Malumphy carried the
ball from defence to attack on several
occasions. James Canniford was unlucky
not to add the Red’s advantage
on several occasions and was causing
the Warrenpoint defence countless
problems. Conor McPolin battled
hard as ever up front and making
it difficult for Warrenpoint to
clear their lines.
Half Time: Ballyvarley 3-2 Warrenpoint
1-1
A more determined Warrenpoint started
the second half and quickly got
an early goal.
More scores would have followed
only for some fine defensive work
by Robert Ellis and Colin McGrath
and a few fine saves from Conor
McPolin who was now between the
sticks for the Reds. Conal McNally
and Maurice McGrath took control
again at midfield feeding a rampant
Ballyvarley attack - Feidhlim Mcauley,
Rory Stewart, James Canniford and
Chris Lennon all netting for the
Reds. Good work by Kieran McShane,
who had moved up to midfield, was
rewarded when his long range strike
flashed into the corner of the net.
Ballyvarley’s scoring was
completed by Cormac Lennon breaking
through the Warrenpoint lines.
Full Time: Ballyvarley 9-2 Warrenpoint
2-1
This was a good performance all
round from the Reds and in particular
Maurice McGrath in midfield, Kieran
McShane and Cormac Lennon who were
dominant throughout while in attack
Chris Lennon, James Canniford, Rory
Stewart and Eoin McConville had
great games. The under 12s play
at home against Clonduff this Saturday.
