Aghaderg GFC and Ballyvarley Hurling Club Notes 3rd March 2008
Aghaderg
GFC and Ballyvarley Hc Club Notes
Hurling
The Senior Hurlers Betsy Gray Cup Semi-final
vs Liatroim was called off at the weekend.
The game will be re-fixed for a later
date.
The Under 16 Hurlers
have already started and under Brendan
Donald they had a good three point win
over Sean Treacys Lurgan recently, winning
on a scoreline of 1-6 to 1-3. At the
weekend the under 16s began their league
campaign at home against a strong Kilclief
side. Despite heavy conditions the locals
hurled well eventually drawing 1-9 to
3-3 and unlucky not to come away with
all the points. The Reds now face Carryduff
away on Sunday 30th March at 12 noon,
followed by a derby match away to Ballela
on Friday 4th April at 6.30pm.
An ability coaching
programme for U12 hurlers commences
in a few weeks, plans for the sessions
are currently being drawn up and an
information leaflet will be produced.
There will also be a session for parents
where they will be shown the basic skills
of the game. Coaches interested in assisting
with these sessions on Saturday mornings
would be very welcome.
The South Down Minor
Hurling team have played two and won
two so far. They travelled to Lisbellaw
to play Fermanagh last week and won
by eleven points. At the weekend they
raised their game to defeat a strong
Armagh side 5-9 to 0-12 with Ballyvarley’s
Paul O’Neill scoring 2-4 of that
tally from midfield. The minors next
game is this Saturday against South
Antrim.
The club currently
has three members on the South Down
Senior team and they face Cavan in Ballela
this Sunday in the National Hurling
League.
Gaelic Football
Senior Gaelic football
training continues every Friday (7pm)
and Sunday (11am) at the field.
In football the under
14 and 16s start training on Sunday
9th March. Both groups are amalgamated

welcome to join. Assistance is still
required for the u16s who have their
games on Tuesday nights. Anyone unable
to attend these training sessions should
contact Aidan Hegarty (U16s) 07813713707
or Mervyn Colgan (U14s) 02838832462.
The minor footballers
have commenced training and anyone interested
in playing should contact Graeme Donaghy
(07825877614).
Football for girls
has commenced and anyone looking details
of it should contact Ciara Devlin 07511477877.
Cul Camp
During the week 7th-11th of July the
club will host a Cul Camp where boys
and girls under 14 years of age will
be coached the skills of Gaelic football,
hurling and camogie by a qualified team
of Down coaches.
