Lisnacree,
Kilkeel & Associated Clubs 1941
- 1950 1941
Mourne Gaels first pitch at Moor Road, in a field of Paddy O'Hanlons. However,
before their first League game the goal posts were cut down and they eventually
played in Currans field (now Dunnaman Park) at the top of Scrogg Road. The Gaels
has a fairly successful season well up in the League and beaten in the Semi-Final
of the Senior Championship by a strong Bryansford outfit. Reports due to the war
were very sketchy and games were not played in any definite pattern due, no doubt,
to travel and petrol restrictions. Teams in the League were Mourne Gaels, Warrenpoint,
Bryansford, Mayobridge, Glenn, Downpatrick, Newry. 1942/1946
After having lost their pitch, St Colman's Park, and the need of a short
amalgamation (Mourne Gaels) with Ballymartin the Young Emeralds played for a season
in Curran's field. However, due to a number of players leaving the area in search
of work, coupled with the difficulty of travel and supplying transport the Club
withdrew from the League. Some Kilkeel players, notably Charlie McConville and
Brendan McManus played their football with Bryansford. In 1946 the Young Emeralds
were re-formed and played Longstone in a challenge match and lost 1-3 to 1-2.
Their competitive match appears to have been in the Feis Sevens on 26th May. They
entered the Junior Championship, which was then played in two sections - South
and East Down - the winners of each section meeting in the Final. Some games were
played at Magee's field Derryogue. Young Emeralds were defeated in the South down
Final by Newry 2-5 to 4-6. On the 4th November, at the Fronter League
meeting at Rathfriland the following teams were entered in the Intermediate League:
Derrlecka, Ballyholland, Kilkeel, Longstone, Newry II, Leitrim, Laurencetown.
Brendan Cunningham was elected on the committee. 1947
Very few reports of matches available during 1947, however, periodically
some items appeared. Redmond Hanna and Hugh Rodgers (Longstone) selected for trials
South v's East Down. Joe White on Down Junior Team won against Derry in Ulster
Junior Championship Final. Intermediate League was won by Longstone with 20 points
out of a possible 21 points. Kilkeel finished third. 1948
In
an attempt to improve coverage of G.A.A. games, club secretaries were invited
to send reports to local press. 25th April - Kilkeel defeated Barnmeen 5-8 to
1-7. Team: Brendan Cunningham (James Uncle), Pete Donnan, Tommy McAlinden,
Eddie Colgan, Joe White, Hughie McAlinden, Redmond Seamus (teacher from Antrim),
Tommy Donnan, Danny Fearon, Paddy Donnan, Donnard McConville, Patsy Conkey.
The annual Ceile Mor was held in St. Colman's Hall on Sunday 16th May and
the Annual Sports on 29 August. Minor football started in the Mourne
area and Kilkeel entered a team which included some lads from Ballymartin as the
Lily Whites were out of football at this period. In their first game
against Warrenpoint, the Minors lost a very exciting game 3- 7 to 4-6. They then
defeated league winners Newry 1-2 to 0-3 in a friendly. Team: Cyril
McKnight, Joe Rush, Jim McVeigh, Leroy McErlane, J. Cunningham, Thomas Green,
Paul Bartley, Maurice Murphy, John McCann, M. Byrne, John O'Hare, Charlie Conkey,
Willie Phillips. The Minor team went on to win the South Down League
defeating Warrenpoint 3-6- to 2-2. Scorers: Phillips 2-0. Conkey 1-0, Murphy 0-4,
Dooley 0-2. Additions to the former panel shown were Dennis Dooley, Charley Curran,
Brian Byrne, Patsy Bartley. In the Championship Final, Newry defeated Kilkeel
after a re-play by a single point. 1949
This was a minor year with the Club, and with only the Kilkeel club fielding
a Minor Team in the Mourne area a strong panel was available. However, there were
only a few minors teams going and all were amalgamations of three or four clubs.
The South Down Minor Final at Rostrevor, Kilkeel v Newry ended in a
draw and in the replay at Glenn also ended in a draw and in the second replay
at Rostrevor, Kilkeel won comfortable 2-9 to 0-2.
1950
With a lot of good Minors coming on, Kilkeel entered two teams in the
league A and B. Intermediate team which included a number of the previous year's
minor team won the Intermediate Championship beating Annsborough 3-1 to 0-4 and
the Minors were runners up in the South Down League and beaten finalists in the
Championship. Kilkeel were instrumental in forming a Summer League in the Mourne
area, teams participating Maghereagh, Lisnacree, Attical, Greencastle and Kilkeel.
Joe Donnan, member of the Down Minor Committee; Thomas Green and Paddy Donnan
on Down Panel. Kilkeel A finished fourth in their League, Kilkeel B finished third
in their League.
