U8 Football in Clonduff
At sunny Clonduff on Saturday An
Riocht played five games winning
four and providing football for
twenty boys who would not usually
feature on the U10s.
In the first game Tir na nOg
Portadown provided the opposition
and they applied great pressure but
found the An Riocht defence and in
particular Ronan White, Paul Francis
Doyle and Daniel Hardy impassable.
Then in our first attack Stephen
Flood placed Darragh Campbell for a
goal. Declan Morgan added a point
then crashed in a goal as Tir na nOg
failed to clear their lines. Jack
Rafferty made it ten nil with a well
taken goal. The Armagh team rallied
towards the end but again found it
hard to pierce the An Riocht
rearguard and once they did Paddy
McComiskey in our goals saved well
to keep them out.
Next up were the Mitchels, and Shane
Fitzpatrick caught the throw-in and
fired long for ace poacher Declan
Morgan to shoot to the net. Mitchels
came straight back at us with Ben
Rafferty blocking out a goal chance
and Michael O’Rourke carrying the
ball forward to cross for Declan to
punch home another goal. Darragh
hammered a shot off the bar and
Mitchels counter attacked
dangerously before Ryan Mathews got
in a tackle to win the ball back and
pass to Thomas Sloan who passed to
Declan and he popped over a point.
Thomas added the next point himself
and Steven Doran rounded off the
scoring with a well taken goal.
Then we played previously unbeaten
Saval. Liam Rodgers put Declan in
for an opening point. Conor Small
and Liam were winning lots of ball
but our next score would not come.
Saval hit the post and tried hard
for a goal but Cristian Doyle, Adam
Fegan, Aidan Sloan and Ciaran Rooney
defended bravely and kept them out.
Having weathered the storm Darragh
pointed a free after Liam had won
possession and Michael and Declan
added quick goals before Shane and
Darragh put the game beyond Saval
with points apiece.
Our fourth game was Bosco and would
decide who topped the section. The
Newry boys began best going a goal
and a point up before in an exciting
finish Declan and Darragh both
goaled for a narrow An Riocht win.
In the Cup quarter final Shane
O’Neills Armagh beat us. We began
well. Darragh scored a penalty and
Shane added a goal from a free
before the Newry team finished
strongly with 3:1 in the closing
stages to progress to the semis.

Riocht repeated our earlier league
success over local rivals Atticall.
Junior Camogie Mayobridge v An
Riocht
On Sunday evening the Junior Camogs
travelled to the ‘Bridge in the
league.
Seconds Football An Riocht v
Castlewellan
The seconds scored four goals and
still lost! But then we only scored
four points so it is not really so
surprising. A blustery wind
dominated the proceedings with
neither side really mastering it.
After a cautious first quarter
Castlewellan led three points to
two. Approaching half time they had
opened up a decent lead, seven two,
before Colm Crilly grabbed a loose
ball to shoot the opening goal. In
the last action of the half Stephen
Flanagan bundled in a goal for us to
leave five in it at the break.
We had only managed a Kevin Flanagan
point ten minutes into the restart
when in their first attack Crilly
again advanced from half back for a
second Castlewellan goal. Entering
the final quarter hour Conor Sloan
plucked the ball from the air and
beat three defenders to goal.
Castlewellan worked a couple more
points while our wind ‘assisted’
efforts tailed away.
Then in an explosive finish Sloan
again fielded the ball and slipped
it inside to Flanagan who threaded a
shot past defenders and into the
net. Moments later they combined
again with the same result and then
a third time but the ball ran
narrowly outside the post and wide.
Final score 4:4 to 2:12. Michael
Rodgers, Liam and Joe McVeigh were
best in defence and Kevin and
Stephen Flanagan and Conor Sloan
most effective in attack.
Thirds Football Ballyholland v An
Riocht
The Thirds lost by six points to a
strong Harps team at Fr. Lynch Park
