Match
Reports
U16 Football
An Riocht v Longstone
An Riocht
completed a league double over
neighbours Longstone on Tuesday
though it was a tighter contest than
the 5:13 to 0:15 score line
suggests.
Conor Poland
opened the scoring with two early
points before An Riocht burst into
action with a Christopher Killen
goal off a Diarmuid Flanagan pass.
Killen extended the lead with a
point but the 'Stone were not
finished yet and points from Poland,
Michael Ireland and Gary Trainor put
them back in front. A good point
from Flanagan and another by Killen
swung it back in our favour before
Ireland equalised and then Ethan
Burns saved well from Poland who
followed up with a point to put his
side ahead for the third time.
Another couple from Killen and a
classic score from Darren Doyle
suggested we were about to pull away
but the visitors finished the half
strongly with points from Poland (2)
and Adrian Burden to leave it all
square at half time, 1:7 to 0:10.
Though Poland
edged Longstone in front once more
it was to be short lived and the
last time they would lead as
Christopher Cunningham and Conor
Phillips continued to impress in our
defence. At the other end a long
ball from Wayne Bowater was touched
on by Shane White and Darren Doyle
goaled. In the next attack Killen
rose, caught, turned and cut through
the 'Stone defence at pace to goal
and went on to kick the next three
points.
Like scores from
Trainor and Poland (2) kept
Longstone in touch but after Doyle
had pointed again Kyle Morris glided
through the defence to shoot our
fourth goal and Killen thundered in
the fifth a short time later.
Poland pointed a
free in reply but when Burns went
full length to turn away his penalty
and followed up with another
excellent save the match was safe
though Killen and Morris added late
points for good measure.
U14 Camogie
Longstone v An Riocht
The unbeaten run
of these girls came to a stop on
Tuesday in Longstone when they lost
by six points, 2:3 to 1:0, Christina
Trainor our scorer.
U18 Football
Bryansford v An Riocht
There was no
match in Newcastle on Wednesday for
the minors as Bryansford failed to
field a team. Unfortunately half our
team had arrived before word of the
cancellation came through.
U14 Football
An Riocht v Burren 'B'
Played on Friday
to accommodate Burren, An Riocht ran
out easy winners. Centre forward
Diarmuid Flanagan scored an amazing
eight goals.
Minor Camogie
Sevens
At Downpatrick on
Tuesday An Riocht did not give a
good account of themselves in
exiting the minor sevens.
Senior
Football Ballyholland v An Riocht
In Ballyholland
on Thursday another one got away,
with the locals finishing a goal to
the good, 2:11 to 1:11. We had to
work very hard for our scores while
at the other end Ronan Murtagh
proved too hot to handle finishing
with 2:6 and winning a penalty
brilliantly saved by Brendan
McVeigh. At one stage there was
seven points between the teams
though we had that down to the
minimum by the break. A slow start
to the second half allowed
Ballyholland pull away again and
left us chasing the result against
the clock, going for goals too early
probably cost us a share of the
points. It was good to see Ciaran
McVeigh back from injury, coming on
for the first time this season he
scored a goal and put an end to the
Ballyholland backs coming out
unopposed.
Junior Camogie
Newry v An Riocht
The on off saga
continued when Newry again postponed
the match less than an hour before
we were due to leave Dunavil meaning
that a bus had to be cancelled at
short notice and that girls had
gotten off work or left studies for
nothing and had we known sooner the
Kilcoo game could have been
rearranged for Friday. Hardly good
enough.
Seconds
Football An Riocht v Rostrevor
The Seconds
entertained Rostrevor at Dunavil and
entertaining it certainly was though
it ended in heart break for An
Riocht. After giving a huge effort
we failed by a point, 0:16 to 2:11,
conceding two goals from frees in a
three minute spell near the end
while spurning a gilt edged chance
to take at least a share of the
points. Rostrevor looked dangerous
early on especially on the break
though as the game went on the full
back line of Redmond Cunningham,
Colin Flanagan and Michael Rodgers
settled to the task and we began to
get on top. Paddy Cole gave a
display of high fielding and with
Kevin Flanagan collecting much of
the break ball most of the play was
in the Rostrevor half after that
early flurry. It was Cole who
equalised three all on the quarter
hour after Ciaran McVeigh had
knocked over our first couple of
scores. We went on to lead mainly
through the accuracy of Neill Doran
from frees with the strong half back
play of Mark Taylor, Aidan O’Hanlon
and Ray McCartan constantly driving
us forward. At the interval we led
eight points to six. It was end to
end stuff on the restart with two
particularly good scores from Noel
McArdle and Conor Sloan maintaining
our advantage at eleven points to
nine. That stretched to four as Neil
Doran and Ciaran McVeigh added
points apiece but with seven minutes
remaining we were dealt a hammer
blow as Joe Fegan took a quick
thirteen metre free and drove the
ball to the roof of the net. We
responded with a long range Paddy
Cole point but in their next attack
Reds were awarded a penalty and
Fegan placed his shot into the top
corner. Trailing now for the first
time since the opening minutes Paddy
Small stepped up to shoot the
equaliser. Collie Clerkin edged Reds
ahead with his fourth free but
Michael Harper replied. Entering
added time Clerkin pointed again.
Down the field we came but failed to
score and Reds countered to win
another penalty which was saved by
Gavin Finnegan moving smartly to his
left in the last action of the
match. Team: G Finnegan R Cunningham
C Flanagan M Rodgers M Taylor A
O’Hanlon R McCartan M Harper 0:1 P
Small 0:2 P Cole 0:2 K Flanagan C
McVeigh 0:3 C Sloan 0:1 N Doran 0:6
(5f) N McArdle 0:1. Rostrevor
scorers: J Fegan 2:0, C Clerkin 0:5,
P McGrath 0:3, P Gannon 0:1, P
McGreevy 0:1, N Magee 0:1.
Thirds
Football Mayobridge v An Riocht
In Mayobridge the
Thirds scored a tremendous nine
point win. Trailing at half time by
2:3 to 0:6 our boys produced a great
second half effort to win 2:13 to
2:4. Barry Graham and Barry Maginn
were particularly impressive in
defence; team captain Raymond
McCartan never stopped running at
midfield where he combined well with
veteran Seamus Sloan; and player
manager Thomas Sloan justified his
inclusion with a personal tally of
1:4. Team: C Sloan; P Cousins B
Graham D Morgan; B Maginn 1:0 J
Sloan S Clarke; S Sloan 0:1 R
McCartan 0:1; Ronan Cunningham 0:1 R
Doran 0:2 W Morris 0:4; C Cunningham
M McComiskey T Sloan 1:4. Sub E
Binks who arrived late.
Junior Camogie
An Riocht v Liatroim
On Sunday evening
at Dunavil Liatroim just about beat
An Riocht. While the result might
not have been all that we wanted it
was at least encouraging to be able
to field with subs while minus the
three Down minors and several other
players working. Team: C Donnelly, L
Donnan, J Sloan, V Baldwin, M
Trainor, A Clarke, L Brennan, M
Horner, K Curran, A O’Reilly, R
Sloan, N Donnan. Subs L Donnelly, L
Rodgers, S Colgan.
Good luck to the
Down minor girls in the Ulster Final
on Sunday.
U10 Football
Atticall v An Riocht
This was played
last Monday at Dunavil as Atticall
was too wet but the visitors went
home happiest on a 3:1 to 1:3 score
line.
U14 Football
Bosco v An Riocht
Played last
Monday, An Riocht put it up to the
'A' Division side in the
Championship in Newry before falling
short by six points, 2:15 to 2:9.
Philip Murnion played well in goals
with several good saves while
Michael Clarke and Paul Allen were
the pick of the backs. Ethan Burns
and Michael Spiers tried hard in
midfield while Diarmuid Flanagan
bagged most of the scores. Trailing
by nine An Riocht put in a strong
second half showing before Bosco
pulled away again in the closing
moments of the match. Team: P
Murnion D White S Corr M Clarke D
Bowater P Allen M Keenan E Burns 0:3
M Spiers 0:2 A McLoughlin D Flanagan
2:2 M Harper R Donnelly P Rooney 0:1
C O'Rourke 0:1. Subs C Clarke S
