Football
Senior Football v Glasdrumman
The Seniors made it ten straight
wins with this 3:20 to 0:13
victory over Glasdrumman.
Ten players got on the score sheet
in a free flowing display and
there were numerous other goal
mouth incidents. We played with a
strong wind and had the game
wrapped up by the break on a 2:13
to 0:4 score line. Once again the
forward passing, both short and
long, was executed with dizzying
speed and though the Glasdrumman
attack was generally well
contained too many frees were
awarded against our defenders.
Team G Finnegan; J Clarke 0:2, A
Flanagan, J Mc Veigh; D O’Reilly,
L Mc Veigh 0:2, L Fitzpatrick; P
Murney 0:1, K Mc Veigh 1:1; P Cole
1:2, M Clarke 0:7, C Walsh 0:2; R
Annett 1:1, M Harper 0:1, J
Cunningham 0:1. Subs B Sloan, M
Trainor, F Doyle, S Clarke.
Senior Football v Saval
The Seniors created a new Club
record on Thursday with their
eleventh straight win in the
league, bettering the record set
in 1982 when the then Seniors won
ten in a row to pip Longstone for
the Division Two title. Two of the
current management were involved
then also, Tom Cunningham was the
man in charge and Sean O’Rourke
played full forward.
In Saval we began well. Michael
Harper, Martin Clarke and Ciaran
Walsh had early scores. Saval hit
back with two from Gavin Quinn but
further points from Martin (two
frees) and Kieran Mc Veigh moved
us six two ahead. Saval enjoyed a
brief spell on top with three
Fergal Mc Conville points, two
from poor clearances, before James
Cunningham returned a weak kick
out over the bar and Martin Clarke
added another point to make it
eight five at the break.
Paddy Donnelly and Kieran Mc Veigh
exchanged scores on the restart
before Saval had their best spell
of the match. Niall Devlin and
Gavin Quinn both pointed and by
the fortieth minute only the
minimum separated the teams. Then
Saval were awarded a penalty.
Gavin Finnegan dived low to his
left to cover his line and the
ball flew outside of the posts and
wide. From the kick out Liam
Fitzpatrick secured possession,
played the ball on to Martin
Clarke and then to Michael Harper
and into Kieran Mc Veigh who
steered his shot inside the far
post for an An Riocht goal! In
again moments later Martin saw his
low drive cannon out off a post as
we upped the pace. Fergal Doyle
pointed twice, Kieran Mc Veigh
fisted over on the run and Martin
Clarke scored his fifth as the gap
stretched to double scores, 1:13
to 0:8. Saval meanwhile had two
men lined and finished with an
injury time consolation from Niall
Devlin.
This was a creditable display at
the home of our nearest rivals
minus four first choice players
and our second game in seventy two
hours. Gavin Finnegan performed
soundly in goals fisting away
whatever was too dangerous to
catch. Aidan Flanagan performed
well when pulled out the field and
linked the play well. Jim Clarke
had another stormer at the heart
of the defence. Paul Murney and
Kieran Mc Veigh got through a lot
of ball at mid field. Of the front
men Fergal Doyle probably made the
biggest impression while the half
forwards worked tirelessly for the
team when they hadn’t the ball.
Seconds Football v Downpatrick
The seconds are through to the
Championship quarter-finals. They
had little difficulty in defeating
Downpatrick at Dunavil on Sunday,
3:9 to 1:5. Gavin Finnegan was
sound in goals; Gareth Small
showed something like his best
form at full back with good
support from Aidan O’Hanlon and
Michael Trainor; Brian Sloan and
Fergal Doyle dominated midfield
against two bigger opponents;
upfront Declan Ross and Sean
Clarke were the pick with good
movement on and off the ball. We
were four nil up before Hoops
scored their opening point but any
chance of the visitors rallying
never materialised as Michael
Harper (penalty) and Redmond
Cunningham each goaled in quick
succession. Happy at twelve two to
the good we got a fortunate boost
on the half time whistle when
Fergal Doyles long shot dipped
over the keeper for our third goal
to leave us 3:6 to 0:2 ahead.
The second half was a poor affair.
We failed to press on our
advantage and Downpatrick ran in
1:2 in the closing stages, their
goal the pick of the four scored.
Team G Finnegan; A O’Hanlon, G
Small, D Sherry; J Cunningham, C
Flanagan, M Trainor; B Sloan 0:1,
F Doyle 1:3; K Flanagan, J Clarke,
S Clarke; R Cunningham 1:0, M
Harper 1:3, D Ross 0:2. Subs D
Morgan, C Sloan.
Thirds Football v Bredagh
There will be no Championship run
this term for the Thirds who lost
a great game in Bredagh on a 3:10
to 2:11 score line. Bredagh had a
couple of Seniors on board and it
showed as they led 3:6 to 0:4 at
the break. They were particularly
strong around midfield and had an
outstanding forward who bagged 2:7
of their 3:10 tally. But for a
brilliant display from their
keeper who denied both Ronan
Cunningham and Declan Sloan with
diving saves we still might have
come away with the draw. Its
Clonduff away in the league this
Sunday.
U18 Football v Downpatrick
The Minors won handily enough in
Downpatrick on a 2:14 to 0:4 score
line having led seven four at the
break.
U16 Football v Ballyholland
In the third Championship match of
the day the U16 beat Ballyholland
4:10 to 3:9. We played against the
wind and trailed at the break 2:6
to 1:4, Rory Cunningham our goal
scorer. After Darren Doyle had
lofted a great point on the
restart Wayne Bowater banged in a
goal and with Conor Cole and Paddy
Gartland adding further goals we
just about bested the home side.
Team A Rogers S Sloan S Corr D
Bowater M Spiers M Clarke M Harper
0:1 W Bowater 1:2 S White R
Cunningham 1:1 D Doyle 0:1 P
Gartland 1:0 C Cole 1:3 D Flanagan
0:2 B Allen. Subs C Clarke, M
White, E Burns.
U14 Football v Aghaderg
The under fourteen footballers won
against visiting Aghaderg at
Dunavil reversing a defeat at the
west Down club earlier in the
season. Another sign of the
improvement this team is enjoying.
U10 Football v Ballymartin
The U10 footballers lost out in
Ballymartin on Monday evening on a
2:4 to 1:6 score line. Under the
specially adapted rules which give
two points for an over the bar to
encourage shooting Ballymartin had
fifteen and we had fourteen.
