Football

Senior Football v Ballymartin

The Seniors won handily enough on a 3:14 to 0:9 score against Ballymartin at Dunavil. First half goals from John Clarke and Kieran Mc Veigh and a third after the break from Martin Clarke set us up for the win. The visitors had a few good moments of their own but found Brendan Mc Veigh unbeatable both from play and from the penalty spot.

Seconds Football v Burren

The Seconds footballers scored an unexpected but thoroughly deserved win over Burren in Burren on Sunday. The victory was built upon a brilliant defence which played as a unit marking tight, covering for one another, forcing errors through tackling and collecting the bulk of the loose ball. While at midfield Neill Doran and Fergal Doyle won more than their fair share of possession. Up front Kevin Flanagan and Conor Sloan worked tirelessly out of possession and held onto the ball when it came their way. Sean Clarke until injured provided the flair.

Scores were at a premium in the first half and at the interval the teams were tied at two points each. Five minutes into the restart substitute dangerous Dave Morgan came in on the end of a flowing move, rounded his man, and under pressure shot to the roof of the net for the only goal of the game. Though Burren replied with two PJ Mc Alinden scores, Daves goal seemed to galvanise our boys and playing a more direct game we shot five successive points to go six clear. Burren threw in some seniors to try and wrest back control and though they did finish strongly, our defence was magnificent in limiting them to a Sean O’Hare fifty and a Kevin Mc Givern free as we held out for a 1:7 to 0:6 win. Team G Finnegan M Rodgers G Small D Sherry A O’Hanlon P Sherry M Trainor N Doran 0:1 F Doyle 0:2 S Clarke K Flanagan 0:1 J Cunningham 0:1 C Sloan M Harper 0:1 R Cunningham. Subs D Morgan 1:0 R Doran 0:1.

Thirds Football v Clonduff

This was postponed to Monday night due to Cemetery service.

U18 Football v Drumgath

This was put off until Monday due to a school function.

U16 Football v Warrenpoint

The U16 lost by nine points at Milltown playing fields and now the best we can hope for in the league is a runners up spot. At half time we trailed 3:8 to 1:5 and though we matched the home side after the break we could not make any inroads into their lead. Team A Rogers C Clarke S Corr D Bowater P Gartland M Clarke S Sloan M Spiers 0:2 S White R Cunningham 0:1 D Doyle 0:1 B Allen C Cole 1:0 D Flanagan 1:3 W Bowater 1:2. Subs M Keenan, M White, E Burns.

U14 Football v Mayobridge

Despite a great start during which we led by 1:3 to 0:1 we fell away badly in the quarter hour before the break and Mayobridge ran in a lot of goals. A better second half saw us make a match of it but the Bridge held on for the win. James Reilly scored 2:4.

U14 Football ‘Paul Farrell Cup’

Fifteen teams took part and after a mornings football the quarter –final draw was in the Shield Bosco 6:4 Clonduff  ‘B’ 1:6, St. Johns 9:5 An Riocht ‘B’ 0:5, An Riocht ‘A’ 0:4 Ballymartin 2:4, Longstone a bye; and in the Cup Kilcoo 5:6 Downpatrick 0:4, Glenn 6:3 Clonduff ‘A’ 1:3, Shamrocks 4:4 Castlewellan 0:2, Saval 2:3 Rostrevor 1:4. The Shield semi-final results were St. Johns 3:2 Ballymartin 3:0, Bosco 4:1 Longstone 1:4; and in the Cup Kilcoo 2:6 Glenn 1:0, Shamrocks 1:1 Saval 2:3.

The Finals produced clear cut wins for Bosco over St. Johns in the Shield and for Kilcoo over Saval in the Cup. Liam Farrell presented awards to all four finalists from the podium in the new stand. Thanks to all who took part, who helped with the teas, the shop, the matches, and the organisation. Its all to do again next Saturday at U12 level, the Brian O’Hare Cup.
