Minor Football
An Riocht v Longstone, Ballyholland
v An Riocht
The minor footballers were flattered
by a six point win over Longstone
on Easter Monday. The visitors
dominated early on and went into
a two nil lead before An Riocht
got a grip in the middle third
through Darren Doyle and Conor
Cole and scored six successive
points for a four point interval
advantage.
Brendan Allen robbed a defender
to place Rory Cunningham for the
first point. Conor Cole set up
Brendan for the second and four
from Declan Doyle pushed An Riocht
further ahead. The keeper saved
well to deny Brendan a goal while
at the other end a one handed
stop from Kevin Mathews prevented
Longstone getting back into it
just before the break.
Though Conor Cole and Darren Doyle
extended the lead on the restart
some silly shooting prevented
An Riocht building a winning lead
and Longstone making the most
of their opportunities, including
two terrific scores from on the
sideline, had the deficit cut
to two points and it could have
been closer for Kevin made a second
point blank save and they also
rattled the crossbar. At eleven
eight the result was very much
in the balance until Darren Doyle
stormed through and presented
Rory Cunningham a shot on goals
from which he made no mistake,
1-11 to 0-8.
Team K Mathews; D Bowater, S Sloan,
M Clarke; P Gartland, S White,
P Allen; S Corr, Darren Doyle
0-1; C Cole 0-1, D Flanagan, R
Cunningham 1-3; Declan Doyle 0-5,
B Allen 0-1, A Rogers. Subs D
White, M White, C Clarke, M Keenan,
R Clarke.
* Several changes for the game
in Ballyholland failed to spark
a better display and the home
side won out 3-9 to 1-8 with Brendan
Allen the An Riocht goal scorer.
U16 Football
Rostrevor proved far superior
to the An Riocht team in Sundays
challenge at Dunavil but the boys
never gave up and were rewarded
with a late flurry of points.
Team A Magorrian; A Higgins, M
Donnelly, G O’Neill; R Clarke,
S Corr, D Higgins; D Doyle, J
McCulla; R McAlinden, R Donnelly,
R White; A White, C ORourke, A
McVeigh. Sub N Murnion.
Premier Reserve League An Riocht
v Bryansford
The Seconds were most unfortunate
not to come away with something
from this entertaining affair
at Dunavil on Sunday. Two goalmouth
misses and too many missed points
from play and from frees prevented
An Riocht from scoring enough
to share the spoils. Bryansford
with an experienced spine to their
team made the most of their chances.
Colm Kearney was unerring from
frees, finishing with nine of
their thirteen points from placed
balls. The Ford were three nil
up when Diarmuid Flanagan opened
for An Riocht with a free kick
over off a post. Sean Clarke made
it two points to five with the
best score of the match and then
had a flicked effort bounce just
the wrong side of the upright.
Bryansford rallied again and opened
a six point gap by the break.
Points from Michael Trainor and
Gary Cunningham on the restart
narrowed the gap but Bryansford
hit back with two converted frees
and a fifty. Then midway through
the half Diarmuid Flanagan collected
a long pass and fired in a goal,
Darren White and Sean Clarke added
points apiece and suddenly there
was only a kick of the ball between
the teams. Bryansford introduced
some formidable subs and with
time running out we needed a second
goal, the chance fell to Brian
Sloan but his goal bound effort
was diverted for a fifty and Ford
finished with another free for
a 0-13 to 1-6 victory. Team: G
Finnegan; C McVeigh, M Rodgers,
M Trainor; S McArdle, J Clarke,
C Doyle; B Sloan, D Sherry; C
Cole, G Cunningham, D White; R
McCartan, S Clarke, D Flanagan.
Subs: R Cunningham, D Morgan,
T Hughes.
Senior Football Challenge An Riocht
v Bryansford
Bryansford won 2-12 to 0-12. An
Riocht were utterly dominant for
twenty minutes and led 0-8 to
0-2 and were unlucky not to goal
from a Paddy Cole effort which
came back off a post. Chris Killen
0-2 and Paddy Cole 0-5 were tormentors
in chief though the visitors did
force two good saves from Gavin
Finnegan. However An Riochts scoreless
final ten minutes to the first
half allowed Ford to narrow the
gap with four unanswered points.
Half-time score An Riocht 0-8
Longstone 0-6. The scoring touch
deserted An Riocht on the restart
with a series of narrow wides
while Kalum King and Adrian Carvill
got on top at midfield for Bryansford
and their first goal in the thirty
eighth minute came off a rampaging
King run. Five minutes later Luke
Howard was upended in the square
and Shane King expertly dispatched
the penalty. An Riocht were limited
to four Killen frees in the second
half as they lost all shape with
both sides emptying their benches.
Thanks to referee Denis Cotter
who stayed on after the PRFL to
take charge of this game. Team:
G Finnegan; C Doyle, J Clarke,
P Sherry; D O’Reilly, L
McVeigh, L Fitzpatrick; P Murney,
A Flanagan; A Cunningham, C Killen,
M Trainor; P Cole, P Cunningham,
G Cunningham.
