Reports
U8 Football An Riocht v Longstone
Two games were played during the
week and very enjoyable they were
too. Jack Rodgers, Matthew Carvill,
Ross Colgan, Aidan Gribben, Caomhan
Campbell and Ronan Campbell all
played very well in one of the games
while Conor Rooney, Conal Baldwin,
Ryan Prichard, Ethan Wright, Eoin
Sloan and Cormac Hardy shone in
the other match played.
U10 Football An Riocht v Longstone
At Dunavil on Monday the U10 boys
played out a thrilling game with
Longstone. Best for An Riocht on
this occasion were Paddy McComiskey,
Thomas Sloan, Conor Small, Hugo
Shields and Daniel Hardy.
U14 Football An Riocht v Warrenpoint
Well done to the U14 footballers
who beat Warrenpoint at Moygannon
on Thursday evening..
U16 Football An Riocht v Drumgath
The U16 footballers erratic form
continued with a heavy loss in Drumgath
though on this occasions both midfielders
were absent. Declan Higgins scored
our three points while Stephen Curran
was the pick of the players on view.
U18 Football An Riocht v Burren
The minor footballers came back
from 0-1 to 0-9 behind to beat Burren
3-8 to 0-14 with a great second
half performance. Ahead one nil
An Riocht soon felt the full force
of a Burren onslaught. However there
were indications that the Burren
defence could be opened up and just
before the break Diarmuid Flanagan
got through for a goal. At the break
Burren led 0-10 to 1-2. Burren kicked
some serious wides on the restart
while An Riocht picked off a few
good points before Michael Spiers
got in but was fouled with only
the keeper to beat and picked himself
up to drive home the penalty. Burren
injected some urgency to their play
but An Riochts confidence was high
and after a storming run from Darren
Doyle Conor Clarke volleyed a third
goal and the home side led. Burren
tried their best but could not get
through the massed Mourne defence
while An Riocht nicked a late point
on the break. Stephen Corr had a
majestic hour at full back well
supported by Michael Clarke. Darren
Doyle was the pick of the midfielders
while Paddy Gartland, Michael Spiers
and Diarmuid Flanagan were the best
of the attackers.
U18 Football An Riocht v Mayobridge
The minor footballers failed to
repeat their success against the
league leaders at Derrylecka on
Saturday going down 4-15 to 2-10.
An Riochts goals coming from Michael
Spiers.
Reserve Football An Riocht v Clonduff
The Thirds football match in Clonduff
on Sunday evening in the Divisional
Reserve league was postponed.
Premier Reserve An Riocht v Castlewellan
Castlewellan were visitors to Dunavil
on Sunday in the All County Reserve
league and came away with the points,
1-13 to 1-6. The visitors played
a very strong team and driven on
by Gregory McCartan at centre field
they led five nil before Darren
Doyle opened the An Riocht account
after twenty minutes. Further points
from Sean Clarke, Conor McVeigh
and Liam Harper made it eight points
to four at the break. An Riocht
enjoyed a dominant third quarter
scoring points from Conor Cole and
Liam Harper but a thirty eighth
minute penalty went wide off the
post. Meanwhile at the other end
McCartan drop kicked a goal off
the underside of the cross bar from
all of thirty yards. Six points
behind with ten minutes remaining
An Riocht put a great move together
finished to the net by Diarmuid
Flanagan but were unable to go on
and secure a deserved share of the
spoils, Castlewellan finishing with
a few frees for a flattering final
score line of 1-13 to 1-6. Michael
Murney, Paul Allen and Jim Clarke
were best in defence while Darren
Doyle did well at midfield. Up front
we were lightweight.
Senior Football An Riocht v Liatroim
In Liatroim on Friday evening An
Riocht won their first game of the
season. Liatroim began in great
style with Liam Doyle pointing before
any An Riocht player had touched
the ball. Aidan Brown darted through
for a second and when PP McCartan
converted a free in the fifth minute
it looked ominous for the visitors.
Another free came back off an upright
and was cleared by Aidan Flanagan
under his posts and that interupted
the Fontenoys rhythm.
An Riocht got a toe hole in proceedings
with a Noel McArdle free and a point
from Chris Killen from play but
these scores were soon equalled
by efforts from McCartan and Declan
Burns at the other end. Liatroim
failed to press on however and An
Riocht got some momentum going with
points from Paddy Cole and John
Clarke. Then in the twentieth minute
An Riocht grabbed the only goal
of the game. Killen played a delightful
through ball to Clarke who took
in on the turn and smashed to the
net from fourteen yards giving Brian
Morgan no chance. A second McArdle
free put three between the teams
but again the game swung in favour
of the home side as they pointed
four successive scores to go back
in front with a point from play
from Dan Morgan and frees from McCartan
(2) and Martin O’Connell.
In added time John Clake pointed
a free to square the match.
An Riocht dominated on the restart
with James Colgan dominating centre
field. Clarke placed Cole for the
lead score and added a free after
a foul on himself. A sweeping move
involving Colgan, Clarke and substitute
Kieran McVeigh ended with Aidan
Cunningham extending the lead in
the thirty eighth minute. Dan Morgan
seized on a break ball to squeeze
over a reply but two points from
play from John Clarke put four between
the teams. Liatroim were struggling
to make any impact against a resolute
An Riocht defence though McCartan
(f) and Declan Burns narrowed the
deficit to two points. Michael Rodgers
made a great block on Brown and
Aidan Flanagan a one handed catch
over O’Connell as Liatroim
threw everything at the visitors.
In a break away attack Clarke took
a long Cunningham pass to point
but the insurance score would not
come and after an exciting finale
of toing and froing Clarke eventually
put two scores between the teams
with the last kick of the match.
An Riocht B McVeigh; J McVeigh,
A Flanagan, C Doyle; J Cunningham,
L McVeigh, D O’Reilly; J Colgan,
P Murney; P Cole 0-2, C Killen 0-1,
A Cunningham 0-1; D White, J Clarke
1-7, N McArdle 0-2. Subs K McVeigh,
M Rodgers.
U12 Camogie An Riocht v Clonduff
The U12 Camogs lost in Clonduff
by 2-0 to 1-1 despite the best efforts
of Clare Connor, Sarah Carvill,
Michaela McDowell and Megan Crawford.
Aine Fearon scored a great point
from a free and Natasha Rice grabbed
a spectacular goal.
U14 Camogie An Riocht v Clonduff
The U14 Camogs won in Clonduff quite
handsomely, 9-5 to nil. Orla Doyle
played exceptionally well and the
pick of the scores came from Beth
Farrell, Noelle Fearon, Jessica
Rice and Nicole Kelly.
U16 Camogie An Riocht v Ballyholland
This game scheduled for Dunavil
on Sunday afternoon did not take
place as Ballyholland failed to
muster a team.
