Aughlisnafin Club Notes 19th August 2008

The Aughlisnafin squad that travelled to Ardglass for the match against Bright on Sunday. Missing from photo Francie Boden and Paddy MClean

Aughlisnafin played against Bright in the first round of the Junior Championship at Ardtole. Bright opened the scoring with a point but the Fin hit back with a well taken goal from Sean Ladd. Bright scored another point and James Brannigan replied for the Fin. Aidy McDonald got the next score of the game pointing from play after some good approach play from Rory McMullan and Chris Doran. By the end of the first quarter the Fin were leading 1-2 to 0-2.

Neither side scored for the next 10 minutes but Bright continued to threaten shooting 4 wides in succession before finally getting their third point of the game. The Fin responded with a sweeping move upfield leaving Adrian O'Hare one on one with the Bright custodian but having set himself up he agonisingly screwed his shot wide of the goal. Bright got the last point of the half to leave it 1-2 to 0-4 to the Fin at half time.

Whatever the Bright management said to their players at half time it made them lift their game as they started the second half with gusto scoring a goal and 3 points without reply in the first 10 minutes. Then it turned a bit ugly with the Bright number 24 receiving at straight red for a nasty challenge on Ben Willoughby leaving him with a deep gash on his chin requiring stiches. Willoughby was then replaced by Kevin Malone.

Sean Ladd, Paddy Mooney and Rory McMullan fought hard to engineer a comeback and almost immediately James Brannigan pointed from a free. The Fin fought valiantly against a strong breeze hitting 3 wides in succession. James Brannigan then had an opportunity to narrow the deficit to 3 points from a 21 yard free but snatched at a shot on goal which the keeper was alert to when the point would have been the better option. It was quick thinking and would have put the Fin in the ascendancy if it had come off.

The game entered the last 10 minutes with Bright 4 points ahead. The Fin then lost Marty Malone for a second yellow. Bright then went on to extend their lead to 7 points before the Fin hit back with two points in the last minutes of normal time, a Sean Ladd free and a point from play from Shane Mooney. The match official only saw fit to allow 30 seconds added time which was puzzling to say the least as their were numerous stoppages in the second half. However at the end of the day Bright proved the better side and time for the Fin had run out. Final score Bright 1-10 Aughlisnafin 1-5.

The Fin can take satisfaction from the fact that they matched Bright in a physical and pulsating contest. It was also pleasing to see that the Fin had a 28 man squad out and with continued committment they can only get better. Congratulations and good luck to Bright in the next round.
