Aughlisnafin Club Notes 28th August 2008

Aughlisnafin seniors were away to Aghaderg on Friday night. The Fin settled quickly playing some lovely football and scoring 4 points in the first 5 minutes. Their hard work was undone when Aghaderg grabbed their first score of the game a goal against the run of play. Sean Ladd pointed a magnificent 45 and Aghaderg replied with a further point.

A moment of madness by an Aghaderg player saw him receive a straight red. With the extra man the Fin had an opportunity to capitalise however they lost their concentration in the ensuing 5 minutes spell when Aghaderg scored two goals and a point to lead by 4 points. The first half ended with Aghaderg 3-4 to the Fins 0-7.

The Fin dominated the possession in the second half and managed to claw back the deficit to 2 points with 5 minutes remaining with Tommy Byrne slamming home to the net after good work by James Brannigan. Hovever Aghaderg broke away in the last minute to score the final point of the game to win 3-11 to 1-13.

This was one of the best perfomances of the season by the Fin. Brendan Quinn was an emergency keeper in the absence of regular custodian Aidy Small and he performed well and could not be faulted for the goals. The back three of B Willoughby, M Malone and P McGuigan battled hard and they were well supported by Paddy Mooney, Sean Ladd and Conor McMullan.

Rory McMullan was a cut above scoring 4 points from midfield. James Brannigan, Shane McCann and Shane Mooney had excellent performances. Up front Marty Burns led the line well with Kevy Walker's and Tommy Byrne's movement letting the midfield and half forwards through for their scores. Scorers for the Fin ( T Byrne 1-0, R McMullan 0-4, J Brannigan 0-3, S Ladd 0-3, S McCann 0-2, M Burns 0-1 ). Keep this up lads. Three games to go. Lets get this elusive win!!
