Aughlisnafin
Club Notes 22nd June 2008
In his excellent
book "The Keys To The Kingdom"
former Kerry manager Jack O'Connor
talks about "inches". Sometimes
that is the margin between winning
and losing games. That's how far away
the Fin were from getting a share
of the spoils in an evenly contested
match away from home against Dromara
last Friday night.
Without 5 of their first 13 players
the Fin showed guts and determination
especially in the first half before
going down 0-12 to 0-8. The strength
in depth the panel now has meant the
management were able to put out a
team that can cope with their divison
four opponents and the gulf between
teams in the league may not be a wide
as some have suggested.
Without the injured Sean Ladd, Paddy
Mooney filled the number 6 jersey
with Marty Malone returning at full
back. Both put in exceptional individual
performances and they were ably assisted
by corner backs Kevin Malone and Ben
Willoughby in restricting Dromara
to few goal scoring opportunites.
Aiden Small was more comfortable in
goals with good handling and variance
in his kickouts.
Without Marty Burns and Aidy McDonald
in midfield Rory McMullan and James
Brannigan took centre stage. Both
players putting in tireless performances
while contributing 5 points between
them.
Up front left corner forward Adrian
O'Hare scored a point from play as
did half forwards Chris Doran and
Shane Mooney. There were also good
displays from Rory Murphy and Sean
Willoughby as well.
Only for the Fin missing two scoreable
frees and efforts from Sean Willoughby
and Adrian O'Hare crashing off the
upright the Fin were "inches"
away from a credible draw.
Training continues on Monday and Wednesday
nights and next game is away to Ballykinlar.
The Fin ladies had a useful outing
against neighbours Kilcoo on Thursday
night in preparation for their championship
game against Teconaught this Saturday
evening in Annsborough.
The youth training was postponed last
Saturday as a result of the weather
and a session to prepare for the Go
Games will be held at 5.30 pm on Wednesday
night.
The Go Games will be on this Saturday.
Details to be confirmed.
A poker classic will be held by the
club this Friday night in aid of The
Leukaemia Ward, Belfast City Hospital.
Starts at 9 pm and a light supper
will be provided. Please support this
worthwhile event.
