U-14 Hurling Match Reportʼs
The Ballyvarley/Ballela under14 hurlers had an easy win over
Castlewellan two weeks ago, romping home comfortably. Played in
perfect conditions the locals dominated from start to finish Patrick
Mackin leading the way for the Reds with a well taken point before
the goals started to come. Peter Verhoven got off the mark with a
close in strike before Owen Magee added two fierce strikes to the
back of the net. The win was based on a strong defence with
Christopher Martin excellent at centre-half, ably assisted by the
tireless running of Thomas McKernan and James OʼMeara, while Lisa
McCusker and Michael Downey ensured no easy scores would be had by
At midfield Tony Hegarty and Conor Strain dominated, the former
getting a total of 3-4, the last goal coming after a piercing solo
run was finished with a low drive to the net.
Upfront all the forwards were in fine form. Ciaron Heaney and Rory
McShane provided the ammunition for Patrick Mackin, who was very
strong at half-forward, and the accurate finishing of Owen Magee.
Ciaron Davis came on to score two goals very quickly and Ryan
McCusker grabbed himself a lovely goal before the end.
It was a comfortable win for the Ballyvarley/Ballela hurlers,
Ballyvarley providing eleven of the starting line-up. Saturday 21st
April sees the under 14s play in the Under 14 hurling feile in

under the name of St Patrickʼs.
St Patrickʼs entertained Liatroim at All Saints Park Ballela on
Wednesday 11th April and came away with a well earned two point
victory. This is a relatively young underage squad and they coped
well with what was a quick and skilful Liatroim team. St Patrickʼs
were missing a few players but everyone gave their all in what was an
enthralling contest. In the end St Patrickʼs came away with a 2 point
victory with the final score being 5-9 to 6-4.
Will take place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd April in
Castlewellan. Please contact the club officials for further
St Patrickʼs are in Section A along with Castlewellan, Carryduff and

like as much support and help at the matches. Each match will last 7
mins each half and the final will be played on Sunday.
