SENIOR MATCH REPORT V LIATROIM
Ballela seniors made the
short trip to Liatroim on
Tuesday night as they continued
the hard fight in division
one with the same squad of
16 players, which had won
in Kilcleif the previous week.
Ballela knew this would be
a tough game against a Liatroim
team that was mixed with youth
and experience.
The match started with Liatroim
in the ascendancy as they
went 3 points up without reply.
Johnny mc Cusker then started
a run of scores, which were
exchanged with the home team
as the match was end to end
with a high standard of hurling
being played. Ballela were
on the receiving end of some
harsh decisions from the local
referee, which enabled the
home team to stroke over 4
frees from dubious decisions.
Despite this, Ballela and
Liatroim played out a spectacle
of hurling and showed what
can be provided from players
from the south down area.
Gary Mc Mullan played well
as usual in goals and had
to withstand a lot of pressure
for a period in the first
half as a lot of sliotar was
dropped in under the bar.
The back line, well marshalled
by the captain Paddy Mc Polin
alongside the experienced
Noel Burns and Andy Mc Givern
done their job and kept the
forwards quiet and no goals
conceded in the first half.
Donal Mc Cann, (who failed
to score) Dan Mc Cusker and
Malachy Magee played their
usual consistent game but
were punished a lot for fouls
that no one else could spot.
Danny Doran and Noel Burns
(jun) played hard in midfield,
as they had to do a lot of
running and were under pressure
from the start as the Liatroim
midfield dominated the first
20 minutes of the game, although
the lads got to grips with
this in the latter stages
of the first half. The match
was played with tremendous
spirit and the challenges
were flying in hard but fair
as the ash clashed.
Ballela didn’t
want the half to end as Johnny
Mc Cusker netted a goal as
they were reeling Liatroim
in. Despite this, the first
half ended with the home team
winning by 2 points.
Liatroim 0-11 Ballela 1-06
The second half began with
a lot of Ballela pressure
but they could not get the
score that would bring them
within touching distance.
Liatroim added a further 6
points and then a sloppy goal
as the defence got their wires
crossed with a few players
trying to clear the same ball.
The player’s
effort and determination cannot
be faulted as the fifteen
that were wearing the jersey
played with heart and pride.
With credit to the Liatroim
back line, the Ballela half
forward’s,
namely, Joe Cosgrave, Mick
Doyle and Ronan Mc Conville
could not get into the game.
Despite this, Johnny Mc Cusker
added another 2 points in
the second half, with Dan
Mc Cusker and wire being the
other point scorers in the
second half.
The match started to get
tense in the last ten minutes
as Ballela still thought they
could get something out of
the game, and as they dominated
the final minutes the Liatroim
keeper saved a penalty and
various one on one’s.
Then in the last minute Liatroim
netted a goal as the Ballela
team had gave their all.
Full time Liatroim 2-19 Ballela
1-12
UNDERAGE PORTAFERRY BLITZ
Ballela under 8's travelled
to Portaferry on Saturday
to take part in a blitz tournament.
The first game was against
Bredagh 2 nd team. This was
very even game with end-to-end
hurling and both teams going
close on many occasions. Michael
McGrath done well to keep
a clean sheet and Aiden Mulgrew
and Ciaran Branniff close
to scoring at the other end.
The game finished with no
score and a draw a fair result.
The second game was against
the strongest team in the
section Ballycran 1 st team.
From the start this young
Ballela team was under pressure
and Ballycran were camped
in the Ballela half and this
lead to four first half goals.
At half time Ballela made
a few positional changes,
which took time to settle,
and Ballycran scored another
two goals. Owen McGreevy and
Niamh McCrory working tirelessly
in midfield got the ball forward
quickly and James McGrath
scored a great goal. This
was the last score of the
game and gave Ballela a bit
of confidence going into the
last game against Ballycran
2 nd team.
The team for the last game
saw a lot of positional changes
with Ronan McCrory in goals,
Kathleen McCormick and Oran
Hughes in defence with Michael
McGrath, Owen McGreevy now
partnered with Conor Mulgrew
in midfield, James McGrath
in the forwards was along
side Niamh McCrory and Cathal
McClure. Ballela started the
strongest with Owen McGreevy
working hard in midfield playing
good ball into the forward
line. Ballela went close on
a number of occasions before
Cathal McClure pulled on a
ball which ended up in the
Ballycran net. As the half
ended Ballela went close to
scoring again.
At the start of the second
half Ballela pushed forward
and got their due reward with
a well-taken goal from Niamh
McCrory. Then Ballela got
caught out pushing forward
and Ballycran pulled one back.
This only fired up this young
team and they moved forward
in search off another goal
to stretch their lead. The
pressure told and Niamh McCrory
found the net for the second
time and this turned out to
be the final score off the
game and a well-deserved victory
for Ballela.
Ballela would like to thank
the Portaferry club for the
invite their club sponsor
O'Rourke Motors and to all
parents for their continued
support.
Ballela Panel: M McGrath,
J McGrath, A Mulgrew, C Mulgrew,

and K McCormick.

night at 7pm in Ballela.
