* Ballela senior hurlers hosted St Agnes’s of Belfast at Pairc Na Naomh on Sunday in a friendly fixture in preparation for the upcoming league campaign.
The game started off at a frantic pace with Ballela dominating the opening minutes against a very physical side with a lot of experience. Ballela put a few scores over with Johnny Mc Cusker scoring 1-3 in the first 20 minutes and Ronan Mc Conville made a scoring comeback, with Ronan grabbing a point. Mick Doyle then scored a fine goal and Joe Cosgrave added a point. St Agnes’s grabbed a lifeline when they grabbed 2 goals in a short space of time, which gave them a bit of hope. The Ballela defence managed to contain the forwards and limit them to 2 points in the rest of the first half. Donal Mc Cann had a point sandwiched in between 2 more points from Johnny Mc Cusker. Gary Mc Mullan had plenty to do and played very well to limit St Agnes’s to the 2 goals.
Half time – Ballela 2-08 St Agnes’s 2-02

The 2nd Half saw a few positional changes from Ballela as they experimented with the squad. Paddy Mc Polin, Noel Burns (sen) and Shane Burns kept the Belfast forwards quiet in the 2nd half and limited them to 2 points in the 2nd Half. Malachy Magee (jun) added 1-2 in the 2nd half with one excellent point from a 65. Connor Rodgers, Stevie Mc Cusker and Niall Burns had their usual games; keeping the half forwards out and creating scores for Ballela, with Niall grabbing an excellent point from a tight angle in the 2nd half. Donal Mc Cann ran the midfield and was first to every ball with great determination. Johnny still had time to grab a further 1-3 with Joe Cosgrave rounding of a fine performance with another point. Ryan Haughey had another fine game in corner forward and Mark Cosgrave kept the Belfast side on their toes with his tireless running.
Final Score – Ballela 4-15 St Agnes’s 2-04 Ballela played well and will continue to improve as the training intensifies over the next few weeks. Dan Mc Cusker, Danny Doran, Noel Burns (Jun) and Niall Mc Aleenan were unavailable for the game.
