Ballymatrin
GFC NOTES for week of 16th Sept
P.j.
Cunningham
Ballymartin GFC
Club Notes:
***The U-14’s
lost out to An Riocht in the league
final on Sunday in Rostrevor. In
a game that was played in very wet
conditions, both teams still managed
to serve up a very entertaining
match for the large crowd in attendance.
The young whites were bitterly disappointed
to loose but they can be very proud
of their displays in 2004.
***Ballymartin
2nd string had Attical as visitors
on Sunday evening in the semi-final
of the Reserve league. Played in
very blustery conditions, Attical
settled the quicker and they met
the short whistle 9 pts in front.
This proved to be a bridge too far
for Ballymartin though they battled
valiantly in the 2nd half to overturn
the deficit.
*** Pat’s
Rd, Ballymartin will be the venue
on Saturday evening Sept 18th for
the Annual Charity match in aid
of the Hospice. This year the Ladies
will take on a Mourne Select with
the neighbouring clubs all well
represented. It is not possible
to list here all the player’s
taking part but as a sampler, some
of those who have indicated their
desire to tog out include former
Ballymartin players such as Seamus
Rogers, Paul O’Reilly, Sean
Fitzpatrick, Seamus Nelson, John
Adrian Annett, Joey Annett, Bernard
Rooney, Gerry Gannon, Brendan McLoughlin,
Paddy Rooney & Billy Sherry,
add to this list, players such as
Cyril Trainor, Diarmuid O’Hare
from Attical, club stalwarts like
John Pat Trainor, Declan Haughian
from Longstone and likewise Terry
Joyce, Liam McGreevy, Pat Trimble,
Liam Murphy & Gerard Magorrian
from Glasdrumman not to mention
An Riocht legend Malachy Cousins
and all of a sudden there is a very
formidable Mourne line-up in the
making. Fr. Peter O’Hare has
also hinted that he may make a special
2nd half appearance after Mass.
The man in the middle will be no
other than Brendan Cousins who will
make sure that the ladies are well
looked after. So if you’re
game for a laugh and want some real
entertainment make your way to Ballymartin
for a 7pm sharp throw-in. Due to
light restrictions this game will
finish at 8pm so make sure you’re
not late as large crowds are expected.
Some surprise names have also promised
their footballing services on the
night to include former All-Ireland
winners Neill Collins, Eamon Burns,
Ross Carr, Miceal Magill and our
very own Paul Higgins who will endeavour
to display their silky skills one
last time. When all the craic is
over there will be a BBQ and disco
in the Ballymartin Inn where Tiny’s
roadshow will take us into the wee
hours. Autographs may be available
for the chosen few but I’m
sure the match will be replayed
over and over many times before
nights end.
***Bumper Christmas
