FORMER Down and Ulster hurling star Danny Hughes is in
the vanguard of a major drive to promote the sport in south Belfast.
It's in the Bredagh club that Danny is bringing his skill, expertise and experience
to bear as a possee of young players help to give the club a fresh image.
Championship triumphs at Under 12 and Under 14 levels have fermented optimism
that within a few years Bredagh will mount a serious challenge to the more established
hurling outfits.
With two Ulster senior championship medals to his credit
and a Railway Cup track record, Danny is ideally equipped to provide the stars
of tomorrow with enthusiasm and skill.
His eight Down senior championship
medals won with Ballycran not only helped to make Danny a house hold name in Ulster
sport but also convinced him of the invaluable role a club can play in a community.
"Bredagh have an excellent set-up and there are a number of dedicated
people here who are totally focused in providing only what is best for the many
talented youngsters that we have," explains Danny, a partner in a Belfast firm
of solictors.
Among the young guns who are firing out a message of hope
for the future are Rory Johnston, Emmet Costello, Bernard Horner, Paddy Woods
and Danny's own son, Daniel.
Helping Danny to erect the platform for
the future are Aidan McKeagney, Tony Dougan, Jim Sheridan, Eamon Mulvenna, Lorenzo
McMullan and Ciaran White.
It's a backroom team of which any club would
be justifiably proud but they are certainly not resting on their laurels.
"No chance. There is too much to be done. We want to try and build on the successes
we have achieved at under-age and maybe take things to another level next year,"
states Danny.
Bredagh will target more success in the Under 12 and Under
14 sectors next year while at the same time focusing on making more progress on
the football front as well.
