East
Down A Championship Semi-final - Bredagh 2-6 Carryduff 1-6
Corner-forward Marcus Young broke Carryduff hearts with a
stunning matchwinner deep into injury-time in this classic encounter at Teconnaught
on Tuesday evening. With the scores level and excitement at fever pitch, Marcus
kept his cool to drive the ball to the net and send Bredagh into their first Final
in many years.
In fact, the maroons are also in the League
Final after last week's home victory over the same opposition. There was never
much between the sides and the lead changed hands no fewer than six times. Bredagh
started well but only led by two points to one (all frees) when Carryduff countered
and scored a fortunate goal.
Within minutes, Danny Nolan
set up Marcus Young for a goal at the other end, and an excellent point from Emmett
Costello saw Bredagh lead by 1-3 to 1-1 at the break. It later transpired that
Costello had broken a bone in his hand at the start of the game, yet he played
through the pain barrier right to the final whistle.
In
the second-half, Carryduff took control and eventually took a one-point lead with
ten minutes to go. Bredagh responded with a Marcus Young point to level the match,
but three goal chances were missed, a penalty claim was waved away and a number
of decisions by the referee left their supporters baffled.
Eventually,
a free fell to Marcus Young and the rest is now history.
