City Girls overcome
tough opposition
Bredagh 2-7 Downpatrick
1-7, Wednesday May 12
Another
terrific performance by the city girls
saw them overcome very tough opposition
and make certain of a play-off for the
All County semi-finals. Downpatrick
had only lost once before this game,
so Bredagh simply had to win to stay
in contention. The large crowd got behind
the Bredagh girls as they showed great
heart and skill to edge the contest
by a goal in a grandstand finish.
Downpatrick's
star midfielder, who also lines out
for the Down Senior ladies team, smashed
a drive off the crossbar and threatened
to destroy Bredagh's hopes, but the
home side tackled bravely and hunted
in packs to close down their opponents.
There were many stars on the night,
like Hannah Murray, Clare Byrne, Moya
McGurk, Jamie Willigan and Amy Cunningham,
though special mention must go to Grainne
Hughes after she gave her best performance
yet in a Bredagh shirt.
The
first-half was a low-scoring affair
with Bredagh ahead at the break by 1-5
to 0-3. Clare Byrne accounted for 1-2
while Amy Cunningham, Moya McGurk and
Kathryn Quinn all added excellent points.
Further scores from Cunningham and Kate
Hollywood had Bredagh in control early
in the second-half, and when Moya McGurk
crashed a superb drive to the top of
the net, the contest looked to be over
- Bredagh 2-7 Downpatrick 1-4. But,
Bredagh did not score again and the
visitors struck with three points and
were very unlucky not to add at least
one goal. Several goalmouth scrambles
saw the ball go everywhere but in the
home net!
