BURREN U16 LADIES V ROSTREVOR
The
Burren under 16 ladies had their second
match in four days on Sunday past when
the reds of Rostrevor paid a visit to St
Marys Park.
After an initial delay because of
refereeing problems, the match finally
got underway under the charge of Shauna
Campbell. Playing against a stiff
breeze it was Rostrevor who opened the
scoring with Sara Clerkin splitting the
posts. This was cancelled out by a
Siofra Murdock free, which was quickly
followed by scores from the ever
impressive Courtney Linden and Catherine
Mc Govern who was to prove a constant
thorn in the reds defence.
Four wides in a row could have left the
girls with a low in confidence, but they
looked to have an added spring in their
steps today and two Siofra Murdock frees
and another fine solo effort from
Catherine Mc Govern left them with a
little breathing space. A great catch
in midfield from Caroline Mc Kay saw her
pass to Emily Brown who hit the back of
the net with a neat finish and from the
resulting kick out, Catherine Mc Govern
took a pass from Mairead Trainor to
round the keeper and toe poke the ball
to the back of the net.
More fine scores from Catherine (3),
Courtney and Kerri Mc Govern left the
score-line 2-11 to 0-01 before the
break. However, a burst of scores from
Rostrevor before the break left the
score with a more respectable look to it
with a minute to play. It was here,
however, that Burren scored the best
goal of the game when Mairead Trainor
“rose like a salmon” to take a fine
catch from a well placed Melissa Mc
Mahon kick out. She in turn fed the
ever-energetic Niamh Mc Grath who hit a
sublime pass over the “robust” full
backs head into the path of Catherine,
and in true “vincy” style she buried the
ball in the net.
The
second half started at a hectic pace and
4 quick scores from the impressive
Aislinn Mc Geough cut the score back
somewhat. Catherine hit back with a
great point from a difficult angle to
build the Burren lead again. A great
point blank save from the confidence
growing Melissa Mc Mahon at the expense
of a point proved to be the turning
point of the half. From the resulting
kick out, Emily Brown scored a goal to
underline her growing reputation as one
of the best young players in South
Down. Another penalty was awarded and
“little miss deadly” herself Catherine
stroked it home with ease to leave
Rostrevor with an absolute mountain to
clime. They did, however, spark into
life for a bit with 2 goals from Katie
Farrell and Aislinn Mc Geough narrowing
the deficit. A clash of heads didn’t
perturb Courtney Lindens vision at all
after a fine solo effort ended with a
great goal and this finally put paid to
Rostrevors chances of getting something
out of the game.
This was a thoroughly deserved and hard
fought victory by the Burren Girls who
scored 6-13 in all. A very disciplined
performance with special mention to be
made of Melissa Mc Mahon in goals,
Shannon “big bird” Murdock and big
sister Cara in the defence who were
excellent throughout, the twin towers in
midfield (Mairead Trainor and Caroline
Mc Kay) and the terrible twins Siofra
and Catherine in the forward division.
However, the game was not only about the
few mentioned above and was in itself a
brilliant team effort by all concerned.
Well-done girls.
