BURREN U16 LADIES V SHAMROCKS

In what will be a make or break few days, the Burren ladies played Newry Shamrocks in the league knowing a win would set them up nicely for a semi-final berth.

It was the visitors Newry Shamrocks, however, who had early ideas of upsetting the party, as they were dominant in most sectors of the field.  A great Courtney Linden goal and excellent points from the boot of Siofra Murdock left Burren in command but Shamrocks replied with the same scores to leave the match at level pegging in the early stages.  An excellent Catherine Mc Govern penalty followed by points from Kerri Mc Govern, Emily Brown and Catherine Mc Govern (3) put Burren back in control.

The next 10 minutes belonged to the Newry girls and they managed 1-4 without reply in this phase.  But when another penalty was awarded to Burren and finished by Catherine with aplomb this broke the momentum of the Shamrocks play.

Emily Brown finished the scoring in the first half to leave Burren with a six-point advantage.

On the resumption of the game – both Kerri Mc Govern and Emily Brown were clearly listening to their instructions at the interval as they both smashed home goals.  This was followed by points from Kerri again and Niamh Mc Grath, Mairead Trainor, Caroline Mc Kay and Catherine Mc Govern to leave Burren with a little comfort going into the last 15 minutes.  They didn’t take the foot of the gas here though and a quick burst of 2-01 from Catherine Mc Govern with one goal an exceptional finish from the most difficult angle and points from Courtney Linden (2), Kerri Mc Govern, Siofra Murdock (2) and Emily Brown left Burren running out easy winners in the end.

This was a very tough game for the ladies but will stand them in good stead for the up coming match against Rostrevor on Sunday.  Although convincing winners on a scoreline of 7-21 to 3-08 there is still room for improvement.  Dead ball situations need to be capitalised on every time, so hopefully “THE POLAND FACTOR” won’t be of too much hindrance to Siofra in the remaining matches!!!!  They are another step closer to the league play offs and if the work is done they should make an impression on this stage.
