BURREN UNDER 16 LADIES V BALLYMARTIN
In
a tough and very often over physical
encounter, the Burren under 16 ladies
recorded a good result over Ballymartin
on Sunday last. The game started at a
ferocious pace with no quarter given by
either side. It was however Catherine
Mc Govern who opened the scoring with a
point for Burren with a well taken
effort from a difficult angle. From the
resulting kickout Caroline Mc Kay broke
possession into the path of Siofra
Murdock who drew the oncoming defender
and slipped a pass to Catherine for the
first goal of the game. Even though her
leg was heavily strapped, Catherine
seemed to be making little of her
injury.
In
the next sequence of play the
Ballymartin keeper was picking the ball
out of the net again after the deadly
Kerri Mc Govern blasted home from close
range. The Burren girls were causing
all sorts of trouble to Ballymartin but
had to make the most of the assistance
of a strong breeze in the first half. A
fine catch by Mairead Trainor in
midfield and pass to Catherine left her
close to the sideline and a wreckless
challenge left her with another bruise
to the head, however the delay in the
taking of the free kick meant nothing to
“little miss cool” herself Siofra as she
split the posts with ease.
A
fine solo effort and point by captain
Mairead and another brace of pointed
frees from Siofra left Burren with
plenty to spare over their rivals who
were yet to get going in the game.
They did, however, breach the Burren
defence with an attack late in the half
which yielded them a dubious penalty and
this was put away with ease and after a
mix up in the very reliable half back
line, Ballymartin kicked another point.
They had finally landed at the game it
seemed. Their pressure didn’t last long
though as Courtney Linden smashed a
great effort to the back of the net and
this was followed by Niamh “Gucci” Mc
Grath chipping the goal keeper from all
of forty metres. The half ended with
Siofra kicking another fine free.
With the wind at their backs,
Ballymartin should have felt their time
had come in the second half, but
Catherine had other ideas when as early
as the first minute she had the ball in
the net with a great finish. Points
followed from Emily Brown (2) who worked
overtime to disposses the goal keeper
and take a fine score as well as two
from Siofra and a double from Catherine.
Courtney Linden must have stocked up on
Duracell at half time as she was a
constant thorn in the Ballymartin
defence with her running and set up
play. Indeed it was Courtney who ran a
full 60m taking the ball of the
impressive Kelly O’Hare in her own half
back line and leaving the Ballymartin
defence in tatters before slipping a
neat pass to Catherine who gave the
keeper absolutely no chance with her
thumping finish.
This spurred the Ballymartin girls into
action and they hit 1 – 5 without reply,
which was a worrying lull in the Burren
game. However, upon the introduction of
Eimear Ryan for Cara Murdock and Sinead
Mc Kay for Shannon Murdock they did
finish strong with excellent points from
Emily Brown and Siofra Murdock.
The
ladies also had a guess the score for
the Down v Armagh match on Sunday but
unfortunately there was no winner of the
first prize of £50.
The ladies next
game is away to Clonduff and a set date
is yet to be finalised as we go to
print.
