Dawsons
deserts Carryduff - 07/02/03
Frank Dawson former Clonduff manager
and County Hurling manager has defended his decision
to leave the job of Carryduff senior manager and take
over at Bellaghy, Co Derry. Dawson had only taken
over at Carryduff after Christmas and his decision
to walk away from the Carryduff Club after just a
few training sessions has created intense fury among
sources at the Belfast club.
Sources from the Carryduff Club have
indicated their disappointment at the recent events
and feel they have been let down because of the committment
previously given to them by Dawson. However they have
stated that this does not deflect them from their
goal of improvement for the year ahead and in providing
a focal point for the ever expanding community of
Carryduff.
Dawson told the Down Democrat that
he received an offer which was, “just too good to
turn down,” although he admitted he didn’t find it
easy to turn his back on Carryduff. “This is the first
time in over 20 years in coaching and management that
I have left a club after agreeing to do a job for
them". “I can understand how Carryduff feel about
the whole affair". “But the stark reality is
that these kinds of jobs only come around on a very
limited basis".
“Bellaghy, with all due respect to
Carryduff, are one of the big guns of Ulster football".
“They have a superb set-up. They have tremendous players,
players that can perform at both club and county level".
“It would have been an act of complete madness if
I had turned down their offer to manage a club that
has realistic ambitions of challenging for Ulster
honours".
