Carryduff
u12's win Castlewellan Shield - 28/08/2003
Carryduff took part in the Edward Toner Memorial Cup in Castlewellan
on Saturday the 23rd August. An impressive array of teams from Down, Armagh and
Antrim took part, sixteen teams in total.
Carryduff were
paired with Clann na Banna, Crossmaglen Rangers and Bryansford in the initial
league stage with the top two teams going through to the next round. After a 0-04
to 0-09 loss in the opening game to Clann na Banna, Carryduff had it all to prove
to themselves in the next game and they accomplished this in style by beating
pre-tournament favourites Crossmaglen by 2-06 to 2-05.
At the end of the group stage three teams were equal on points, Carryduff, Crossmaglen
and Clann na Banna. Unfortunately Carryduff lost out on points scored and went
through to the shield section.
A 2-06 to 0-04 victory against
St John's of Belfast put the Duff men through to the final with Longstone, victors
over Bredagh. In a very physical game Carryduff edged ahead at half time by 1-05
to 1-02. Carryduff dominated the second half with a brilliant display of football
which would the grace All Ireland Final to win out by 4-08 to 1-03.
A special congratulations must go to Darragh Goodwin who deservedly was presented
with the Player of the Tournament Trophy.
