Under 14 Hurling Match Cancelled

The hurlers last match in the East Down section of the Under 14 league which had been scheduled for Friday 28/5/04 has been conceded by Kilclief. This means that the team finish in third place behind Bredagh and Leitrim in the section. The league now splits with the top East and South Down teams entering the 'A' championship with the Ards teams. The remaining teams (including Carryduff) will be drawn in a two section All County competition with the top two teams in each section playing in the 'B' championship semi finals later in the year. Training for the Under 14s continues on Sunday mornings from 10.30 -12.00 noon.

Meanwhile, the Under 12 hurlers play their last East Down section game this Saturday at 2p.m. away to Kilclief. Players to assemble at St. Joseph's Hall at 12.30. Again, after this match, the league will 'split' on the same basis as the Under 14 competition.

Junior Football Update

Carryduff v Saval -22/5/04

This was the junior ladies first home fixture and was played under ideal weather conditions on Saturday evening.

The two evenly matched teams provided entertaining football for the vocal Carryduff home support. The first half saw the half backs Antonia O’Kane, Donnla Fisher and Emma Swail getting a good supply of ball in to the forwards where Aine Molloy, Gemma Mulligan, Susan Irvine, Nuala Small, Niamh Dawson and Deirdre Swail all tried hard. At the interval Saval lead by a point.

The play was very close during the second half where Suzanne Baxter and Claire Adams did a lot of work at midfield. The full back line of Caoimhe McDonald, Claire McGoran and Siobhan O’Grady had to try hard to keep the roving Saval forwards at bay especially the nippy Natasha. Kathryn Rooney was kept busy in the goals and made some telling clearances. Eimear McKay and Mairead McKee tried hard when they were introduced.

This performance showed that this team is well capable of competing with the more established ladies clubs and if something can be done about shooting then their first win should not be too far away.

Final score Saval 3-7 Carryduff 1-5

NOTE - T raining on Thursday evenings for junior and under 16 ladies will be at Lough Moss. Time 6-00 to 7-30. All current and new members welcome.

U-14's Defeat Dromara

The u-14's travelled to Dromara on Tuesday with a place in the next round of league fixtures already assured.

The boys had a tight grip on the game right up to half-time. Half-time score, Carryduff 2-13, Dromara 1-2. Disaster struck in the 28th minute when full back Ryan Forrestt attempted to block a goal bound shot. He landed very awkwardly and broke his arm. We wish Ryan all the best in his recovery and are sure that he will be sorely missed by the squad.

This had an understandable negative effect on the rest of the squad who just held on in the end to win by 4 points. Final score, Carryduff 3-17 , Dromara 5-7.

Seniors Win In Thriller.

The seniors produced a dramatic comeback to beat visitors Glenn in their rearranged fixture on Monday night.

Six points down with only eight minutes remaining, Carryduff finally produced the form that they are capable of to win by 2-10 to 0-15.

The visitors started strongly with three early points (2,4,6) as their movement and speed caused havoc in the Carryduff back line. This was rectified by Gavin Kelly and Philip Maguire switching opponents.

As Carryduff settled they were given a major boost with Eamonn Blaney (11) punching the ball to the net after Ronan Lawlor had dropped a free perfectly to the edge of the square. Chris O'Neill put Carryduff into the lead in the fifteenth minute with a free.

Glenn (16,17), Eamonn Blaney (20), Glenn (21,22), Michael Brethnall (25) and Chris O'Neill (28) swapped points to see the tie level at half time.

Ceathrú Aodha Dhuibh 1-04 Glenn 0-07

Glenn opened the second half scoring with two scores (1,3) as Carryduff started slowly. A Chris O'Neill (5) free kept the Duff in it but a number of unforced handling errors and wayward passes threatened to undo Carryduff as Glenn scored 4 on the trot (8,10,12,14).

Ryan Hanna's introduction for the final quarter saw the game change direction as his fielding and driving runs proved too much for Glenn who struggled to get the ball out of their half.

Ryan notched his first point of the game on 17 minutes, and even though Glenn managed two final points (19,20) to move them six points clear, it was Carryduff who were dominating.

Ryan added his second score in the (22) minute followed by one from Barry O'Neill (24). Mickey Brethnall (25) sent the home crowd wild by finishing off a Brian McCreanor break through to leave only a point in it. Chris O'Neill (26) scored his 4th point of the match to draw the sides level.

With Tom Scullion and Gavin Kelly mopping up any attempted Glenn break out, Carryduff pressed for the winner and it duly arrived in the final minute of the game from the boot of Ryan Hanna to give Carryduff the one point win.

Ceathrú Aodha Dhuibh 2-10 Glenn 0-15
