Seniors Beat Bosco

Carryduff welcomed Newry Bosco to Carryduff for the first time on Friday evening for their Division 3 fifth round game with both teams desperately in need of a win to get their seasons back on track.

A young Bosco team, missing star forward Francis Downey, found Carryduff in no mood to repeat the mistakes of last week's match against Darragh Cross.

Mickey Brethnall (3) opened the scoring and despite loosing corner forward Kevin Blaney to injury after only five minutes of the game, Carryduff maintained their shape with Matthew Donnelly proving a worthy replacement. Frees from Ronan Lawlor (10) and Chris O'Neill (11) gave Carryduff an early cushion as Bosco failed to convert two frees of their own.

It was the 25 minute of the game before Bosco registered their first score but this was quickly cancelled out by Eamonn Blaney to give Carryduff a 0-04 to 0-01 lead at the interval.

Chris O'Neill grabbed a point from a free 2 minutes after the restart but it was Bosco who started the half more strongly. Declan Alder was forced to make a point blank save before two Bosco points (4 free, 5) gave Bosco some hope.

The defining moment of the game saw Chris O'Neill dispatch the ball to the back of the net (15) after being put through one on one with the Bosco keeper by brother Barry. A second Ronan Lawlor free (15) was a reward for Carryduff's increasing dominance in midfield as Bosco repeatedly failed to get the ball out of their own half.

Man of the Match Chris O'Neill brought his tally to 1-03 after 18 minutes of the half in what was Carryduff's final score of the game to put them seven points in front.

Bosco threatened a comeback, again forcing a brilliant save from Alder and recording three points on the trot, but it was too late for them with the Duff winning out by a four point margin.

Carryduff have already made their mark on the first evening of the Down Feile na nGael weekend. Feile is the premier Under 14 hurling event in Down and this evening saw two Carryduff players, Declan Doherty and Conall Early take part in individual competition against players from all other hurling clubs in Down. Conall participated in the Poc Fada contest and finished a creditable fourth in this tournament. Pride of place however went to Declan Doherty who entered the individual under 14 skills competition and finished second in Down. In doing so, Declan overcame stiff competition from representatives of more 'traditional' hurling clubs such as Portaferry and Ballygalget and was only defeated by a strong performance from Ballycran's Donal Ennis. Well Done to both boys. Their efforts bode well for the under 14 team who travel to Portaferry on Saturday to take part in Division Two of Feile an Duin.

The Under 14 hurlers made the journey down the Ards peninsula today to take part in Feile an Duin. The journey to Portaferry proved worthwhile as the boys finished third out of eight teams in Division two as well as winning the 'Best Dressed Team' award in the Feile parade. The day commenced with the Parade as all the under 14 clubs in Down marched through the village to St. Patricks Park. There, a number of awards were made with Carryduff displaying their fashion prowess as the team were selected as the best turned out team. The boys then turned their talents to the playing field as they qualified for the Division Two Cup competition with a 2-0 to 1-1 victory over Ballyvarley.

Carryduff's scores came from Declan Doherty and Darragh Brownlee with Niall Rogers, Rory Conway, Ross Mc Parland and Gary Morris all producing match winning performances. The boys then reached the semi finals of the Cup where they came up against eventual winners, Liatroim. Carryduff lost but only after a strong display which had the Liatroim players on the back foot for much of the second period. The game finished Carryduff 0-2 Liatroim 1-3 and Carryduff had stars in Conor Beatty, Darragh Goodwin, Conall Early(0-1)and Conor Mc Cullagh.

Defeated at the semi final, the boys went into the third place play off against a fancied Castlewellan team. However, Carryduff showed their skills and scores from Declan Doherty (1-0) and Liam Morgan (0-1) had the Purple and Gold in the lead at the interval.

Eoin Conway, Daniel Mc Glinchey and James Toner also had good first halfs. After the interval, Castlewellan piled on the pressure but the Carryduff boys stood firm with Aaron Eccles, Niall Rogers and Mark |Mc Conville in fine form. The boys conceded a solitary goal and so won the game by the narrowest of margins to complete an enjoyable day.

U-14 (M) Footballers win again!

The U-14's travelled to Liatriom on Tuesday in the East Down u-14 league. Despite losing a few players due to exam commitments, the squad dug deep and came away with a very comprehensive win.

Played on the junior pitch at Liatriom which restricted the usual movement and direct football of the Duff lad's, the game was virtually over by half-time as Carryduff raced into a 2-12 to 1-1 lead. Liatriom missed a dubious penalty at the end of the first half which could have narrowed the gap and also rattled the Carryduff crossbar. With a host of wides and a few scares, Carryduff came out for the second half in more determined fashion. The wide count was reduced and the scores kept coming. Five substitutions for Carryduff did not disrupt their game and the boys ran out easy winners on a scoreline of 4-23 to 1-3.

Best for Carryduff were Ryan Forrestt, Conall Early and Rory McCormick.
