Recent Hurling Round Up - Some you win, Some you lose

The Club's hurlers have been busy in the past week with five matches resulting in a mixture of results but continued progress at all levels.

The Under 14s began the five match series with a challenge away to the Ards where they met a young Portaferry team. The Carryduff boys showed the progress being made as they defeated the homeside on a 4-3 to 3-0 scoreline. Declan Doherty and Darragh Goodwin contributed the majority of the scores while in defence, Conall Early, Conor Beatty and Conor McCullagh produced outstanding performances.

The Under 12s were the next side in action as they began their league campaign and were unlucky to suffer defeat at the hands of visitors, Darragh Cross. Peter Mc Goran, Daniel Mc Glinchey and James Lavery turned in top class performances before going down by a single goal. Bredagh were the next visitors to Carryduff as their Under 10s took on and defeated the homeside, who had stars in Gareth Lynch, Seamus Mc Cann, Daniel Murray and Ryan O Neill.

On Thursday last, the Under 14s travelled to Kilclief to meet the local Ben Dearg side. In what was truly a game of two halves, Carryduff dominated the opening period with Aaron Eccles, James Toner and Chris Heaney in fine form. Declan Doherty and Darragh Brownlee were prominent in attack and the Carryduff boys were unlucky to be two points behind at the interval. The second half was a different affair entirely as Kilclief moved up a gear and ran out winners despite the best efforts of Niall Rogers, Rory Conway and Mark Mc Conville in defence. Last match of the week was a return game with Bredagh for the Clubs' youngest hurlers. This time Carryduff took revenge at Cherryvale winning on a 4-1 to 1-1 margin. Michael Mc Grath, Rory Boyle, Eoghan Rogers and Eoin McGlinchey helped keep out the Bredagh attack while up front, Conor Rooney and Rory Mc Grath had excellent games.

All in all, the players on the different Carryduff teams can take heart from their performances which are particularly noteworthy as the Club only played their first hurling match one year ago this month.

Seniors' Darragh Cross Horror Show

The Seniors had a game to forget against Darragh Cross on Friday evening loosing by 1-06 to 2-12.

After only 4 minutes on the clock Darragh Cross were 2-01 to 0-00 in front including a penalty. Three Chris O'Neill points and a Ronan Lawlor goal brought Carryduff back to within three it was the closest they got for the remainder of the game as a succession of Darragh scores in the second half put the game out of sight.

In truth this was a game that Carryduff did not deserve to win with the Darragh men winning every contest and picking up on every slack Carryduff pass.

The Carryduff full forward line which was so impressive against Drumaness were starved of possesion as wayward pass after wayward pass failed to reach them.

Next week sees Bosco visit Carryduff when the Duff players will need to show a marked improvement to have any chance at a win.

u16 (M) Win Big Derby Game

Dynamic Duff

A player down after just 2 minutes a display of tenacity, teamwoek fitness and skill saw Carryduff U16s triumph over Bredagh at Cherryvale.

Carryduff opened the scoring through Andy Moorhead(3). Bredagh however were on top at this stage but resolute carryduff defence restricted them to a goal(9) and a point (10). Having weathered the storm Carryduff replied with a Chris McConville point(14) and when Cian Slevin was hauled down in the square a penalty was awarded(18). Conal Doherty's shot went high for a point and a visibly lifted Bredagh team stormed forward to point on 19 an d 21 minutes. Carryduff however stuck to their task, Cian Slevin worked hard for a point(26) and while Bredagh scored on 29 Andy Moorhead reduced the deficit to the minimum with a fine point on the stroke of halftime

Carryduff 0-6 Bredagh 1-4

Carryduff fine tuned their game plan at half time and proceeded to dominate the opening exchanges. A goal bound Kevin Briggs rasper was turned over the bar(3) and when Ben Quinn was foot blocked Carryduff had a second penalty(7). Conal Doherty confidently despatched to the net to put Carryduff in front. The bredagh attack was being well marshalled but on 11 minutes the Carryduff defence was harshly penalised and the resulting penalty was converted. Lifted by this Bredagh pointed almost immediately to bring the game level(12). Amazingly this was to be their last score as the Carryduff boys as they have done in the final quarter of each game to date raised the tempo and pulled away.

Sean McCreesh powered from midfield with goal on his mind and when his initial shot was blocked he calmly slotted in the rebound with his 'weak' right foot(17).Carryduff were now buzzing and the ability of Cian Slevin and Ben Quinn to win ball inside allied to the support runs of the midfielders and half forwards saw the scoreboard tick over through Moorhead(23) Quinn(24) and Doherty(26). The Carryduff defence continued to stifle any Bredagh attacks and the final action of the game saw Sean McCreesh point a 21metre free to cement the Carryduff victory. In an excellent all round team performance Michael Murphy Conor Brennan Conal Doherty and Sean McCreesh were prominent though the workrate of the entire team negated the numerical disadvantage

U-14(M) Footballers make it 4 out of 4!

The U-14's faced their toughest challenge to date in this year's East Down U-14 League at home to St.John's on Tuesday night.

Playing against a very stiff breeze in the first half the boys made light of this and played a great mixture of running and kicking football.

Despite the wind advantage, St.John's found themselves 3-2 to 1-3 down at the interval.

With the wind at their backs in the second period, the Duff lads turned up the pressure and produced some of the best football seen on the pitch this year. Their intelligent use of the ball saw Carryduff rack up 3-4 in the second half. St. John's replied with only a last minute penalty, which was superbly saved by Ciaran Lavery in goals but he could not keep out the rebound, and a few late points to leave the final score 6-6 to 2-6.

Carryduff team:
1 - Ciaran Lavery
2- Justin Stronge
3- Ryan Forrestt
4 - Matt McCauley
5- Connor Magee
