U-16 Ladies Win Bredagh Tournament
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Sunday Carryduff u-16 ladies took part in the
‘7’s tournament at Cherryvale.
In the first game against Aughlisnafin the
Carryduff ladies got off to a shaky start going a
goal and point down in the opening quarter. The
‘Duff’ ladies quickly got the measure of the running
passing game and inspired by great individual
performances by Catherine Rooney, Emer and Kate
McKay, Carly Fay and Antonia OKane started to
dominate. Emer McKay snatched two well taken goals
before the first interval.
The second half saw Orla McCaffrey snatch an
early goal and the Carryduff ladies were now on top
in all sectors with Claire McCourt and Antonia OKane
sweeping up at the rear. Emer McKay had a starring
role during this period, took 4 more points while
Carly Fay got in the scoring act with a good goal to
leave the final score Carryduff 4-04 Aughlisnafin
1-01.
The second game against hosts Bredagh proved a
more close affair. Kate McKay and Carly Fay worked
hard to get two points while Bredagh responded with
a point. Ciara Smyth, Julie Coulter and Emma
Magorrian all got involved in the fray and with
Catherine Rooney unbeatable in goals The Bredagh
Ladies couldn't find a way through. Two further
points from Ciara Smyth and Emer McKay sealed the
issue.
Carryduff 0-04 Bredagh 0-01
The 3rd match against Downpatrick saw 2 tired
teams as the humidity and earlier running had taken
its toal. Carryduff were dominant but could not turn
possession into scores. This match ended in a low
scoring draw Carryduff 0-01 Downpatrick 0-01
The two near neighbours Carryduff and Bredagh now
found themselves in the final. Carryduff took
control at an early stage with the two McKays and
Carly Fay dominating around midfield. Emer got a
point followed by a goal. Kate then went on a long
solo and notched over a good individual point. Orla
McCaffrey, Emma magorrian and Claire McCourt covered
acres keeping the Bredagh runners under control
while joint captain’s Antonia OKane and Catherine
Rooney played leaders parts in snuffing out the
determined Bredagh attack and holding them
scoreless. Final score Carryduff 2-03 Bredagh 0-00
The ladies all got presented with medals and
Jerome Quinn presented the cup to joint Carryduff
captains Antonia OKane and Catherine Rooney.
The Carryduff ladies would like to thank hosts
Bredagh for the invitation to participate in this
well organised event.

u12 Hurlers Too Good For Shamrocks
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Choice of 23 Brave Carryduff Hurlers played with
great spirit on Saturday June 18. The referee threw
the ball into the midfielders and James Lavery was
the first to capitalize by finding the loose ball he
had hit forward and lifted and hit toward target.
The ball was going over for a point when the
Shamrock keeper got a stick to the ball and
unfortunate for him directed in for a goal.
That was in the first minute. One minute later
Center Full Forward Gareth Lynch struck a moving
ball just outside the keepers box provided by Seamus
McCann over the keeper's hurl to put Carryduff ahead
by two goals. That was the way it stayed for the
first half. After a knock in the first half and Keen
to get back on in the second Gareth Lynch scored
from a sliding tackle his second goal of the match
within two minutes of the throw in. Shortly after,
Left full forward Conner Rooney struck a super loose
ball on the ground provided again by Seamus McCann
to put Carryduff ahead by 4-00 to 0-00.
Then Right Full Forward Michael McGrath in his
second week just back from injury got a goal on the
scoreboard. The best goal of the match must have
been that of Eoin Conway's hit hard from the
Carryduff half right on target, too hard and
accurate for the goalkeeper and defenders to keep
out. Gareth Lynch scored the next goal and then
Seamus McCann who had provided a lot of the balls
forward deservingly got a goal of his own. Goal
Keeper Daniel McGlinchy was itching to come out of
goals was replaced by Eoghan Rodgers and when he did
scored the first point of the match. Gareth Lynch
matched this with a point of his own.
Towards the end of the Match James Lavery hit a
strong and accurate shot on target to secure his
second goal providing the first and last scores of
the match. The Newry Shamrocks got a good point of
their own taken forward by two frees and deserved
better than the score line showed.

Under 16s Defeat Castlewellan
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Under 16 hurlers had a magnificent 11-5 to
6-5 victory over Castlewellan this evening. Last
Friday in the first match of League Section 2, they
had suffered a 4-5 to 3-4 defeat at Ballyvarley. It
had been a game in which Carryduff played a poor
first half, staged a second half fightback and were
unlucky to lose. The players had obviously learned
from that Ballyvarley experience and the 13 players
who played against Castlewellan were determined to
secure victory. It was a fighting performance from
the start with Paddy Craig, Rory Conway and Stephen
Adams resolute in defence. The midfield of Niall
Rodgers and Declan Doherty dominated in the first
half and laid on numerous chances for a free flowing
forward line. That forward line made the most of the
chances on offer racking up 8-5 (to Castlewellan's
0-1) before the interval. Carryduff's first half
scores came through Darragh Brownlee (6-0), Declan
Doherty (1-2), Conall Early (1-1), Eoin Conway (0-1)
and Liam Morgan (0-1).
It was clear that Castlewellan's performance
would improve in the second half as they sought to
reduce the large deficit. They launched attack after
attack and notched up a number of goals as a result
with Jason Croskery and Brain Mc Cartan particularly
threatening for the visitors. Despite the
Castlewellan onslaught, Carryduff had enough
possession to retain a comfortable lead throughout
with Darragh Brownlee adding a further two goals to
his tally while Aaron Mc Aneaney(1-0) had
Carryduff's other second half score.
The performance was all the more remarkable as
Carryduff fielded without a number of regulars.
Under 12 player Eoin Conway had a brilliant game
while Ross Mc Parland also made a valuable
contribution. Above all, the goalscoring display of
Darragh Brownlee was the highlight of the match as
he notched up 8-0 during the course of the game.

u14s Unlucky Against Ballyvarley
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In their Section 2 games, the Under 14s have been
very unfortunate in their matches to date. Opening
against Castlewellan some weeks ago, they put up a
battling performance before going down to a narrow
away defeat. Gary Morris, Conor Harding and Conor Mc
Cormack had strong performances in this match.
In the subsequent game against Mourne, the U-14s
lost by two points to a Mourne team who had in any
event conceded the game due to their fielding of
overage players. The most recent U-14 match was last
Monday at home to Ballyvarley and what a game it
was.
Fielding with 13 players due to competing
fixtures, the boys put up their best performance of
the year. They raced into an early lead with Gareth
Lynch hitting the net on a number of occasions.
Darragh Goodwin and Conor Mc Cullagh were also in
excellent form while keeper Jason Lynch kept the
opposing forwards at bay, assisted by Ryan O Reilly
and James Rooney.
A late spell of Ballyvarley pressure saw them
draw level at the interval with the half time score
5-2 each. In the second half, the Ballyvarley team,
led by Chris Short, took control and hit two goals
to put the visitors ahead. Carryduff however fought
back strongly and with ten minutes remaining had
again drawn level.
At this stage the game could have gone either
way, but it was Ballyvarley who caused heartbreak
for the home team when they hit a late goal. Despite
this defeat, the Under 14 management can be proud of
the team performance with Matthew Adams, Jason
Lynch, David Turner,Jamie Gunn, Matthew Jones and
Gareth Lynch all playing their part.
