Carryduff U-13s
played in the league final against Bryansford
in Ballykinlar minus a number of injured players.
They started well and dominated the first half
leading 1-04 to 0-02 at half-time.
Bryansford's midfielder was in form in the second
half and with the wind in his back scored a number
of excellent long range frees. Bryansford came
into the game more but Carryduff defended well
and unfortunately squandered a number of chances
to kill the game off. Carryduff won in the end
3-08 to 1-10. Carryduff's captain Conor McFlynn
lifted the shield for a deserved victory.
Well done to each and everyone of the squad of
35.
The day had started with the sad news that Rory
McDonnell's (full-forward) grandfather had passed
away on Saturday night. Despite this Rory decided
to play and gave a display that his grandfather
John McDonnell would be proud off.
Unfortunately for the club and the team the day
also finished on an extremely sad note.
On the way back to the club rooms in Carryduff
a number of parents and kids stopped at Brennan’s
for a celebratory ice cream. It was here that
Brendan McCann, one of the victorious U-13 mentors
fell ill. Unfortunately Brendan did not recover
despite the great efforts of all those parents
that were by Brendan’s side, the medics
that attended and a special mention to the staff
of Brennan’s shop that offered immense help
and support.
Brendan has been involved with the players in
the present U-13 squad since his son Seamus started
playing at 7 years of age. Brendan’s big
goal was to succeed and he certainly did that
by 1pm on Sunday 09 December 2007. He was always
very proud of his son Seamus on the football field
and no more so than in the final.
Brendan's passion for the game rubbed off on
his wife Margaret who follows the team everywhere
in total awe of 'her 2 men'.
Brendan was a true Gael and a very loyal servant
to Carryduff in both football and hurling. He
was greatly respected by Carryduff club members
and was acknowledged as a key man in the development
of the U-13 squad.
Brendan was a fantastic husband to Margaret,
a true father to Seamus, a strong family man with
high values for Margaret's family and his own,
a legend in the eyes of the kids he coached and
a friend to anyone that was fortunate to know
him.
God bless you Brendan and may you rest in peace.
