Sandwiches At A Premium At The Bank of Ireland u10
Boys Football Tournament
Saturday 16th June will see nearly 250 young
footballers descend on Carryduff GAC for their 5th
annual Under-10 Gaelic Football Tournament.
The Invitation tournament, which is sponsored by
Bank of Ireland, will involve 12 under-10 teams from
across Ulster playing at the fast-growing club’s
Knockbracken Drive home.
Based on previous years’ attendances, up to 500
mums, dads, grannies and grandas will be expected to
come and cheer along their young stars over the
course of the day. Which means that apart from the
team on the pitch, teams of dedicated sandwich–makers
will be busy in the run-up to the event, making an
estimated 1,000 sandwiches to be served to hungry
players and their families throughout the day! The
community effort involved in organising the
tournament has been considerable and over the years
Carryduff GAC has provided a focus for a strong
sense of community in an area which is rapidly
changing and developing. The club is very keen to
promote the event - and gaelic football in general –
right across the local community.
The tournament begins at 10:30 and will culminate
with the award of 3 trophies to the winning teams
later that afternoon.
The emphasis on the day will be on fun – for both
the children playing and for the spectators
attending…and if the tournament inspires you to
take it further, Carryduff have a full programme of
football for Under-10 and Under-8 boys and girls on
Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Lough Moss
playing fields. All welcome.
Please feel free to contact Simon Devlin on 07769
744583 for any further information required.

Council and Jeffrey Harrison, Network Mortgage
Manager NI of Bank of Ireland along with Carryduff
u10 players David McCrudden, Darragh Connolly and

Tournament.

Duff Girls Hammer Bredagh
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
U-12 Ladies continue to blaze a trail in the Down
league with a comprehensive win at sunny Cherryvale
on Sunday morning. Carryduff dominated from the
throw in and showed no mercy in an awesome display
that their Bredagh opponents simply could not match.
Team captain Rebecca Clinton led the way with an
early goal before sending Aimee Lavery in for her
first goal. Rebecca Clinton sent over a point as she
continued to cause the Bredagh defence all kinds of
problems.
Amy Hamill chipped over another point before Aimee
Lavery revelling in her full forward role bagged two
goals and two points from good balls played in
early. A Jessica Foy point and two from Aoife
McCrory before the break put the Carryduff girls
firmly in control.
Half-Time Bredagh 0-0 Carryduff 4-07
Despite five second-half substitutions it was more
of the same from Carryduff as Aimee Lavery shot to
the net soon after the re-start. Bredagh did manage
to get a goal back from a shot that rebounded off
the keeper but three points from Jessica Foy and two
more from Aimee Lavery dispelled any notion of a
Bredagh comeback.
With Niamh Gorman, Aisling O'Hare and Emma Papafio
keeping the Bredagh forwards at bay Carryduff pushed
on to increase the margin of victory.
A long speculative shot from Amy Hamill was carried
over the line by the Bredagh keeper before Jessica
Foy scored the goal of the game following a mazy run
past a hard pressed Bredagh defence she crashed the
ball to the net.
A poor clearance was intercepted by Sinead
Farquarson who lobbed the ball over the keeper into
an empty net. Aimee Lavery struck for her fifth goal
before the finish and Amy Hamill lashed in her
second from close range to complete an impressive
performance.
Carryduff remain unbeaten on top of the A section
league with one game left.

U14 Development Squad Play Friendly
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
U14 Ladies development team travelled to Saul on
Wednesday night for a friendly game. This was the
first opportunity for the development squad to play
together as a team.
In ideal playing conditions the girls were placed
under considerable right from the throw-in. Saul
stars Rachael Curran, Rachael Turley and Catherine
Hamilton took immediate charge of the game and
dominated most of the first half. The Carryduff
defence, full backs Rebecca Coulter, Rebecca
O'Rourke and Clare McKnight and half backs Meghan
Murtagh, Katy McCann and Clare Lavery fought hard to
thwart the onslaught but Saul were too strong.
Carryduff did however test the Saul defence on
several occasions. Niamh McGrath who played with
dogged determination, was unlucky not to score while
Katy McCann after an amazing run from the half way
line was foiled just at the last minute. Orla McKay
was industrious and tried extremely hard to lead the
charge. Fiona Rodgers captain for the game worked
tirelessly in the mid field and Clare Lavery's
performance was also worthy of note. Meghan Doherty
was goalkeeper for the first half and tried very
hard against a determined Saul team.
Half time Saul 3-05 Carryduff 0-00
The second half performance was much more
encouraging and Carryduff as you would expect came
out fighting. Emily Duffy went into nets and
although apprehensive, was outstanding, making
several vital saves. The Carryduff forward line
finally pierced the Saul defence and were rewarded
by a superb point scored by Meghan Connery. Meghan's
good run of form continued, scoring a great goal
following a fine individual run. Katy McCann worked
hard and was rewarded with two points. Niamh Mc
Grath, ably supported by Laura McGeough, Emma Boyd
and Catriona Hynds, scored a well deserved point.
Ellen Hagan playing her first competitive game made
a very good contribution at centre half back.
The girls were winning the second half up until the
last few minutes when unfortunately Saul scored two
late goals.
The highlight of the game was when goalkeeper Emily
Duffy went on a superb solo run. She took everyone
by surprise and reached the half way line before
Saul realised what was happening. The subsequent
pass and contined attack by Laura McGeough was
repelled by Saul. Quick thinking Emily!

Disastrous First Half Cost Seniors Dear
A terrible first half performance by the Seniors
gifted visiting Annaclone with two points on Friday
evening.
Rampant Annaclone notched 4-07 to Carryduff's 0-02
as a record defeat looked on the cards.
A more aggressive and determined Carryduff came out
for the second half and gave the visitors a much
closer game before succumbing to a 5-12 to 2-07
loss.
Carryduff's scorers were Conal Early and Barry
O'Neill with a goal a piece, Ryan O'Neill with 4
points and Richard Carey, Chris McConville and Aidan
McGirr with a point each.
1743 - Midfielder Barry O'Neill got the first
Carryduff goal against Annaclone.

U12 B Ladies Suffer Narrow Defeat
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
U-12 Ladies suffered a narrow defeat at Saul on
Wednesday evening in a keenly contested tussle.
Played in balmy summer sunshine both sides served up
a committed encounter enjoyed by the travelling
support from Carryduff.
Saul with a physically bigger presence in key areas
started stronger and hit several wides in the first
ten minutes. Eventually they got a point from one of
a number of 'handy' frees but Carryduff hit back
with a goal from Sinead Early after a scramble in
front of the Saul goal.
Saul came back again to level with two more pointed
frees. However, good defending from keeper Kate
McGuigan, Claire McGinnity, Amy
Foy and Meg McCann kept the goal intact despite
intense pressure.
Saul grabbed two more points before the break to
leave half-time score Saul 0-05 Carryduff 1-00
Several changes at half-time saw the Carryduff girls
take the field with renewed determination.
Sinead Early converted a free to pull a point back
before Saul struck for a killer blow, a ball over
the top was met by two unmarked Saul forwards who
left the keeper with no chance. But Carryduff
refused to give in and continued to take the game to
their opponents. With Laura Reid and Niamh Gorman
working hard in the middle of the field, supported
by Emma Papafio getting forward they began to create
more openings with Sinead Early taking advantage to
put over another point.
Eimear McGrady began to see more of the ball and
supported by Emer Magennis caused the home defence
plenty of problems. Grace Bergin and Emma Jones got
on the end of through balls but were quickly
smothered by the Saul defence. Saul managed another
point before Sinead Early finished an excellent move
to the net.
However, the referee added little time to enable
the girls to find an equaliser. Well done to all the
girls who took part in an entertaining and spirited
contest.

Minors Overcome Heat & Dromara/Liatroim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caryduff were deserved victors in a tensely fought
game played in extremely hot conditions on Wednesday
evening. Both teams had to contend with the heat and
the water carriers on both sides were busy on the
night.
The first half opened with a blistering move from
the Carryduff team that saw full forward Connor
Donnelly finish expertly to the back of the St
Mary's net. Despite this promising start Carryduff
squandered a number of chances that should have
resulted in scores and the home side having a
credible lead.
To the credit of St Marys they began to dominate
periods of play and the game was poised at 1-01 to
0-03 at half time.
Copious amounts of water were consumed by the
Carryduff players at half time and this helped to
limit the mistakes on a night when posession was
everything and passing had to be pin point accurate.
The game see-sawed with both sides providing an
entertaining game of football which was ably
referreed.
At the crunch period of the game, the last quarter,
Carryduff emerged the stronger with a number of well
taken points and a converted penalty by Cian Slevin.
Best for Carryduff in defence were Ryan Forrest,
Justin Stronge and Gary Morris. Both Carryduff
midfielders battled heroically with St Mary's while
centre half forward Ben Quinn made a number of
telling interventions in the last period of the
game.
Darragh Brownlee and Connall Early again proved
thorns in the St Mary's side while Declan Doherty
and Martin Murray ran themselves ragged in the name
of the half forward task.
Ciaran Lavery once more proved what an excellent
goalkeeper he is with a series of saves on ground
shots that had goal written all over them. Well done
to the whole Carryduff minor panel.

U12 Ladies Stroll To Win Against Downpatrick
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carryduff U-12 girls strolled to an effortless win
in the summer sunshine in their last home league
game on Tuesday evening. They outclassed the
visitors in a one-sided contest which was never in
doubt from the moment Jessica Foy's early shot
bounced over the bar. Downpatrick to their credit
battled bravely throughout but struggled to make any
headway against a stronger Carryduff outfit.
Carryduff girls showed their ability to put over
points from all angles in the first half before
Aimee Lavery struck two goals before the break.
Half-Time Carryduff 2-12 Downpatrick 0-00
Despite several changes in formation and line-up
after the break it was more of the same with Katie
Magorrian getting an early goal to restart the
scoring. Niamh Gorman made the most of playing up
front to get on the scoresheet as did first-half
goalie Rebecca Clinton. Jessica Foy grabbed a couple
of goals while sub Eimear McGrady weighed in with a
goal and three points. Siobhan Cunningham finished
off the scoring with a point.

Carryduff Reserves Secure Two More Points Away To
Saul
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carryduff Reserves travelled to Saul on Monday night
and came away with two more valuable points to
secure their second position in the table. In a game
that was to end ill tempered, Carryduff played a
game with two very contrasting halfs.
Carryduff started brightly and within one minute had
two chances which were put wide by Ruairi McKay and
Conal Early. The resulting kick-out was then won at
midfield and fed directly back into Jason Scott
(Full Forward). The ball then broke to Darren Price
who kept his cool to round the Saul defence and slot
the ball into the net.
Two further points in quick succession from Chris
McConville (4th and 5th ) and a uncustomary point
from Mark Morris (7th) gave Carryduff a comfortable
lead.
A surging run from Connor Brennan resulted in a
free, which was taken by Paul O'Neill who found
Darren Price free in the danger zone. Darren
unselfishly released the ball to Neill Magowan who
found the back of the net with ease.
Throughout the first half Carryduff played a brand
of football that has typified the team spirit in
this years campaign. Jason Scott at full forward was
showing great leadership and got his just rewards in
the 15th minute. Mark Morris at half back was having
a outstanding game and drove forward to win
possession. He found Paul O’Neill who cleverly
picked out Jason who relished the opportunity to
finish to the net.
Saul then registered their only score of the half
with a point from play. Further points from play by
Ben Fitzsimons (19th) and Chris McConville (24th)
left Carryduff with the upper hand at half-time.
Half-time score Carryduff 3-06 Saul 0-01
Carryduff know that Saul would not go down without a
fight. Minors Neill Magowan and Conal Early had been
impressive but were replaced at half-time with exams
in mind. Carryduff seemed unsettled with the changes
and it was Saul started the better. They ran at the
Carryduff defence who were drawn into fouling in the
danger areas. Resultant frees on each occasion
allowed Saul to notch up four pointed frees in the
first 13 minutes.
Carryduff’s only reply had been a point from a
free by Chris McConville(3rd). Somehow Carryduff had
allowed themselves to become complacent and the free
flowing football had deserted them. However a point
from play by Stephen Kelly (14th) and a further free
from Chris McConville (20th) appeared to settle the
nerves somewhat.
Saul were continuing to battle hard and were awarded
a penalty when the Ben Fitzsimons brought down a
Saul forward when he placed in a one on one
situation in the large parallelogram. Saul converted
the penalty which had to be retaken due to an
infringement. Carryduff maintained their composure
at a time when Saul may have thought their was a
glimmer of hope by having reduced the deficit to 9
points. Three well taken scores by Chris McConville
(23rd), Darren Price (24th) and Ruairi McKay (25th)
created an unassailable cushion. Finally Darren
Price placed a ball into Mark McCartan who made sure
of his goal with some precision.
Unfortunately frustration was to slightly boil over
and what had been a hard fought game, ended a
somewhat ill-tempered affair. Despite the
indifferent second half performance, Carryduff
Reserves secured two more invaluable points to
maintain their second place.
