Minor Championship Defeat
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Carryduff minor squad showed great fight and
determination in a very tightly fought championship
match played in front of a home crowd. This was a
high scoring match with plenty of goals and
excitement. At half time Carryduff led by two points
2-04 to 2-02.
After the interval the St Johns midfield began to
link up with their forward line resulting in a
number of goals in quick succession. Carryduff
allowed the away side to take the initiative during
the early part of the second half. Going into the
last quarter the sides were even at 3-05 each.
Carryduff took the lead however with a well worked
goal from Darragh Brownlee who notched up 3 goals
during the game. The last fifteen minutes was a
tense affair with St Johns gradually increasing
their lead.
Carryduff would not give in but unfortunately ran
out of time and were unable to sustain a comeback
despite a well taken opportunist late goal by Cormac
McCrory.
St Johns emerged deserved winners only just, with
fine performances from No 15 D. Machin and their two
midfielders J. Savage and N. Gibney.
Ciaran Lavery was again a tower of strength in goals
and was ably assisted in the back line by Matthew
McCauley who has just returned from injury. Martin
Murray and Declan Doherty both had excellent games
while with a bit of luck Darragh Brownlee could have
converted a fourth goal except for a disputed block
by a St John's defender.

U12A Ladies Maintain Unbeaten Start
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The U-12 Ladies maintained their unbeaten start to
the league returning with both points after a hard
fought encounter at Castlewellan.
Played in near perfect conditions at a sunny
St.Malachy's Park, Carryduff took the lead with an
early point from Rebecca Clinton put through by a
pass from Aine Kerr. However, Castlewellan were
winning a lot of ball through their
big midfield partnership but they found the
Carryduff defence resolute in the face of pressure.
Superbly marshalled by Aimee Lavery the back line
denied Castlewellan any space forcing their
opponents into long range wayward shooting.
Midfielder Jessica Foy relieved this early pressure
with a brilliant individual goal cutting in from the
left to chip over the
keepers head to the corner of the net.
Carryduff failed to extend the lead as a couple of
frees went wide before Castlwellan hit back with two
quick points. Just before the break Carryduff
conceded an unfortunate goal as a kick out rebounded
into the hands of a Castlewellan forward who shot to
the net.
Half-Time Castlewellan 1-2 Carryduff 1-1
Eimear McGrady and Grace Bergin entered the fray on
the re-start to try and stretch the Castlewellan
defence but it was their forwards who seized the
initiative scoring two points in a row.
With half backs Sinead Farquarson, Jenny Henry and
Anna Jackson working tirelessly to win possession,
midfield duo Amy Hamill and Jessica Foy began to see
more of the ball. Jessica Foy burst through to put
the ball over the bar to reduce the arrears to two
points before a good pass from Aoife McCrory put
Siobhan Cunningham clear for an excellent point.
The constant threat from Jessica Foy attracted some
rough treatment as her opponents doubled up on her
and a blatant trip was punished by a yellow card for
her opposite number. But this attention failed to
deter Jessica as she picked up the ball wide on the
left to waltz past several Castlewellan defenders
before blasting an unstoppable shot to the corner of
the net.
Claire Boyd came on for the hard working Emma
Papafio to try to give fresh impetus up front. Ahead
by two points Carryduff had to withstand a
nervewracking final ten minutes as Castlewellan
poured forward. However, the Carryduff defence stood
firm with Aimee Lavery and Niamh Gorman making some
magnificent catches, Aisling O'Hare and second half
sub Ciara McMahon also made crucial interceptions to
deny their opponents.
A late point from Castlewellan left the minimum
margin between the teams at the final whistle. This
was a hard earned victory in a game where scores
were at a premium and both defences can take credit
for this in what was an enthralling contest.
Many thanks to the relieved Carryduff supporters who
made the trip to cheer on the girls.

Annaclone Find Their Form Against Carryduff
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Visitors Annaclone eventually found their way to
Carryduff on Saturday and after a delayed start both
teams turned in an entertaining display of football.
Early pressure from the visitors yielded a point
followed by two quick goals. Despite excellent
kick-outs from Olivia Gilbride in nets Carryduff
struggled to win possession around the middle of the
park and Annaclone took advantage to register
another goal. With Laura Reid, Emer Rooney and
Rachel Moore working hard to win breaking ball the
forwards began to see more of the ball in the
Annaclone half.
A clever ball over the top of the Annaclone defence
was picked up by Sinead Early who raced clear to
shoot the net. There followed a period of sustained
pressure from Carryduff as the forwards worked hard
to win Annaclone kick-outs.
Katie Magorrian and then Sinead Early kicked two
fine points to finish some good work by Rachel
Conway,Emma Jones and Meg McCann. However, the
threat from Annaclone's quick breaks was underlined
by another goal and a point before the half time
whistle.
Eight changes in personnel at half-time gave several
girls a chance to make their competitive debuts.
Some excellent covering at the back by Claire
McGinnity and Amy Foy kept the Annaclone forwards
quiet as Carryduff worked hard to get back into the
game.
Eventually the overworked defence conceded two
further points before Eimear McGrady bravely
converted a second goal despite getting a knock to
the face from the goalie.
With Emer Magennis and Rachel McCabe winning more
loose ball, Sinead Early was put through again and
found the net after a fine solo run. Rachel McGuigan,
Katie O'Hagan and Sian Clifford came on to help the
overstretched defence with Niamh McBride getting
good distance on her kick-outs.
Annaclone registered a couple more goals before the
final whistle in a game that was played in a good
spirit with some fine passages of play from both
teams.

Seniors Get Out Of The Rut
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carryduff Seniors travelled to Glassdrumman on
Friday night in search of two much needed points in
order to get out of their the rut.
Without a win since 20th April, the team were
delighted to welcome back Aidan McGirr from
suspension and Adrian Scullion from a premature
retirement.
From the start Carryduff seemed determined to
kick-start their season. However it was Glassdrumman
who opened the scoring in the first minute with a
point from play. Carryduff responded on the fourth
minute with a Ruairi McKay point. Two wides followed
from Glassdrumman including one from a 45 metre
free. Then the first of three well taken goals by
Richard Carey. The long ball into full forward Aidan
McGirr by Ben Fitzsimons, broke to Richard who made
no mistake and decisively hit the net.
Aidan was to prove to be a handful all night for the
Glassdrumman full-back. Thankfully direct football
from Carryduff allowed them to utilise Aidan to his
maximum.
Glassdrumman kept in touch a point from a 13 metre.
A further point from play reduced the Carryduff lead
to one point before Chris O'Neill lifted Carryduff
with a point from distance.
Aidan McGirr then shot wide. From the resultant
kick-out Ciaran Conway fielded the ball cleanly and
played the ball into Aidan McGirr's area. Aidan was
first to respond and with strength and determination
he rounded his opponent and made sure of his goal.
Aidan followed this up with a further point from
play which was counteracted by a Glassdrumman
pointed free on 24 minutes.
The final goal of the half occurred when Ciaran
Conway once again fielded the ball with ease and
played the long ball into the danger zone. Aidan
McGirr broke the ball to Richard Carey who buried
the ball in the net to register his second goal of
the first half.
Half-time score Glassdrumman 0-04 Carryduff 3-03
The second half started with Carryduff opening the
scoring in the first minute with a well executed
point from Ruairi McKay. Richard Carey then shot
wide when it seemed to score a goal may have been
easier.
However from the resultant kick-out Richard was to
get his third goal. Again Ciaran Conway retrieved
the ball and quickly fed the ball to Aidan McGirr
who broke the ball into the path of Richard who
volleyed to the roof of the net.
Carryduff then scored three further points from play
through Aidan McGirr (3rd and 8th) and Sean Molloy
(7th).
It looked at this stage there was no way back for
Glassdrumman having only registered one point from a
13 metre free in the 8th minute.
However Glassdrumman had not read the script and
refused to give up. Two goals in quick succession on
14 and 15 minutes through their nippy corner
forward, meant that the outcome was far from
certain. Ciaran Conway settled the nerves somewhat
with Carryduff’s final score of the game on 15
minutes, a point from play.
An extremely tense period ensued with the Carryduff
rearguard led by Adrian Scullion holding tight. Two
further points from Glassdrumman were not enough and
Carryduff ran out worthy winners. The rot was at
last halted with a pleasing display of direct and
quick moving football by Carryduff.
