Rostrevor Provide A Close Encounter
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A home match against Rostrevor on Sunday turned out
to be a close encounter between two evenly matched
teams.
At midfield Kate McKay and Emma Magorrian set up
attacks which put Carryduff into an early lead. The
forwards Eadaoin Early, Lee Ann Murray, Alannah
Connery and Niamh Molloy were on top of their games
causing the Rostrevor defence all sorts of problems.
Megan Doherty battled hard taking a goal and a
point.
The half backs Caoimhe Quinn and Julie Coulter had
the measure of their opponents while centre half
Hannah Magorrian had her best game at under 16 this
season continually running at the Rostrevor defence.
An injury to the influential Kate McKay half way
through this half caused problems to Carryduff in
the midfield area. Maeve Magennis and Ciara Doherty
defended well as did Tara Bergin and goalie Katy
McCann who was unlucky in her attempt at stopping a
Rostrevor penalty which put the sides level at the
interval.
Half time score Carryduff 1-03 Rostrevor 2-00
The second half was a hard fought affair with both
sides holding the lead at different stages. The
Magorrian sisters played strongly during this half
with Hannah racing through from the half back
position and taking a goal at a vital point in the
game.
Aoife OReilly won good possession at midfield while
Bronagh Kerr , Maria Lundy and Alison Hoy all tried
hard on the forward line. Second half goalie
Stephanie Grant was kept busy and pulled off some
good saves.
Carryduff were the more skillfull side this half but
could not convert their possession advantage into
scores. Rostrevor got through for another goal but
the Carryduff ladies responded with well taken
points and ran out eventual winners.
This was their third victory on the trot leaving
them well up this league table.

U12 A Ladies Draw With Kilcoo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The u12 girls travelled to Kilcoo on Tuesday evening
for a first ever encounter at this level. In the
event it turned out to be an epic struggle between
two fiercely determined teams. Carryduff opened the
scoring with a point from Aine Kerr but the forwards
were finding space difficult on a tight narrow
pitch.
Kilcoo hit back with a somewhat fortunate goal that
deceived the keeper before Carryduff with a greater
share of possession hit back with further points
from Jessica Foy and Aine Kerr as Aoife McCrory,
Siobhan Cunningham and Laura Reid drove at the
Kilcoo defence.
Kilcoo grabbed a second goal before the break to
leave Carryduff trailing at the interval by one
goal.
Half-time Kilcoo 2-00 Carryduff 0-03
A resurgent Carryduff stormed back into the game on
the re-start with Jessica Foy soloing through the
home defence to score a goal that brought the sides
level.
With Amy Hamill and Sinead Farquarson winning more
ball around the middle of the field Carryduff began
to create more chances and Aine Kerr grabbed another
goal and a point to extend the lead.
At the back Niamh Gorman, Aimee Lavery and Aisling
O'Hare were immense under pressure as they foiled
Kilcoo attacks time and again. In front of them
Jennifer Henry and Rachel McCabe worked tirelessly
to pick up breaking ball and win vital possession.
Kilcoo were a constant threat, however, and caught
Carryduff napping with two quick goals from frees as
the defence were slow to react. Emma Papafio made a
spectacular stop to prevent a further goal as Kilcoo
stepped up the pressure.
Carryduff replied with another well worked goal
finished by Aine Kerr as well as two points from
Jessica Foy. But another Kilcoo goal after what
looked like a foul on the Carryduff keeper as well
as a couple of points from frees left Carryduff
trailing by four points with minutes left. A foul on
Rebecca Clinton was punished by a converted free
from the same player to leave a goal between the
sides.
When Carryduff needed a saviour it was almost
inevitable that midfielder Jessica Foy was the girl
to supply a dramatic equalising strike after a
surging run through the Kilcoo defence.
This was a gripping contest between two committed
teams and Carryduff can be proud of the way they
responded to a tough physical challenge in what was
a great advertisement for Ladies football at this
level.

Bredagh Take Their Chances to Overcome Carryduff
Minors
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carryduff played their local derby match with
Bredagh on Wednesday 16.5.07 on the Carryduff pitch.
The game was competitive and was played in a very
sporting fashion by all those concerned. The
refereeing was of a high standard.
It was nevertheless a low scoring game. The big
difference was in Bredagh’s ability to combine
with each other on the pitch and build up a lead of
0-5 to 0-2 at half time. Carryduff missed a number
of frees that if converted would have kept them in
contention. Ciaran Lavery made a brilliant penalty
save and indeed the Carryduff keeper Ciaran was
indisputably man of the match. He also pulled off
two further diving saves that had goal written all
over them.
The second half resumed and was played in much the
same way as the first half. Bredagh’s chances were
reduced to the minimum as the Carryduff backs marked
and blocked as best they could. In contrast
Carryduff laboured to create scoring chances despite
a very good centre half back performance by Neill Mc
Gowan. Carryduff failed to register a score in the
second half while Bredagh notched up two further
points.

Carryduff U16(B) Lose To Bredagh
The U16 b squad faced league leaders Bredagh at home
on Tuesday.
For the first 10-15 minutes it looked like Carryduff
were going to make a game of it, winning most of the
kickouts and fighting for every ball.
The relentless pressure from Bredagh took its toll
and some heads dropped and boys stopped competing.
This was a pity considering the efforts put in by a
number of boys. Peter Norris was superb in goals,
despite taking a bad knock to the mouth. He made
some fine saves and certainly got plenty of practice
with his kickouts, which in the main found a
Carryduff man whenever a run was made. When the runs
were made, 9 times out of 10 it was captain Aodhan
McGoran who made the running.
In general the backs stuck to their tasks well, with
man of the match going to Matthew McParland who was
in the thick of everything.
The subs all came on in the second half once Mark
McConville finally gave in to a knee injury after
playing bravely throughout. Thanks to Conor and Joe
from the under 14s, who put in fantastic
performances.
The scoreline doesn't reflect the efforts put in and
there were a number of good attacks, with Jonathon
Henry in particular showing his power, pace and
ability in bursts.
What we need to do now is put in a sustained
performance with the whole team playing together for
the full sixty minutes. Plenty to work on in
training - but isn't that what a development year is
all about.

Under 14 Hurlers through to Championship Semi Final
The Under 14s overcame Warrenpoint in an away tie on
Wednesday evening to qualify for the B hurling
Championship semi final next week. Played in wet
conditions, strong performances from Diarmmuid
Goodwin, James Lavery and Ryan O Reilly in defence
held the Point attackers at bay. Daniel McGlinchey
and Niall Mc Ardle dominated at midfield while up
front, Conor McCormack and Michael Conway played
well throughout the game.
The boys now meet Clonduff in Hilltown next
Wednesday (7.30) hoping to qualify for the final and
avenge their one point Feile final defeat to
Clonduff earlier this year. U 14 Training continues
on Sunday from 10-11.30.
Meanwhile, the rearranged Under 16s game against
Clonduff tonight has had to be postponed due to the
Club's home Senior Football fixture. U 16 players
are asked to attend training on Sunday from
10-11.30.

Carryduff U14 Ladies Maintain 100% Record
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
U14 ladies put in the performance of the season
against Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon. Carryduff
were determined to maintain their unbeaten run in
front of the home support. Not only did they achieve
this in style but they also entertained us all with
a spectacular team performance. All the training,
coaching and advice came together as the girls
overwhelmed their opponents to the delight of their
mentors.
Carryduff were slightly stunned when Downpatrick
went on the attack straight form the throw-in. Ciara
Turley ran through the defence only to see her
excellent effort ricochet off the crossbar. However
after that the Carryduff defence were not troubled
again until later in the half.
Carryduff responded with a determined and well taken
goal from Orla McKay. This was followed by a series
of spectacular goals from Fiona McCauley, Emma
Hannah, Erin Robinson and Emily Duffy all of which
were the result of fast flowing passing football and
most important of all, unselfish play! This theme
continued as Carryduff piled on the pressure on the
Downpatrick defence with further scores superbly
executed by Hannah Magorrian and Aoife O’Reilly.
Team Captain Aoife O’Reilly played her best game
of the season.
When called upon the half and full back lines of
Niamh Lenaghan, Maeve Toner and Meghan Doherty
responded very well with notable performances from
Niamh Hughes and Emma Boyle. Very little got past
them and they played the ball out of defence wisely
and effectively ensuring the pressure was maintained
on the opposition.
Half time score Carryduff 8.04 Downpatrick 1.01.
At the start of the second and throughout the half
Carryduff made several changes to the team. Although
the structure of the team changed it did not dampen
the enthusiasm or their team spirit. Katie McCann
after having fairly a trouble free time in nets
moved in to the half forward line and gave a very
good account of herself. Niamh McGrath came on and
with her first attack and kick of the game converted
an excellent point. Rebecca Coulter defended
admirably as did Fiona Rodgers, Meghan Connery,
Laura McGeough and Clare McKnight. Emily Hewitt,
Aoife Turner and Angelica Kelly made a good
contribution in the forward line and were unlucky
not to score. Niamh Molloy was outstanding in the
middle of the field and deserved to be rewarded with
a score for all her effort. Meghan Murtagh went into
nets and performed very well.
Well done everyone!!
Carryduff u14s now top of the league – unbeaten!!
A special thanks to Kerri Magowan who was meticulous
in keeping a record of the scores.

Youthful Carryduff Reserves Obtain Deserved Victory
At Annaclone
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carryduff Reserves travelled to Annaclone on Sunday
with what on paper may have been considered a
weakened squad. However a finally balanced blend of
youth in Neill Magowan and Conall Early, and
experience in Dermy Magorrian and Mark McCartan,
were to run out worthy winners in an entertaining
and keenly fought contest. Carryduff started
brightly with midfielder Tony McMahon breaking
forward at speed in the 1st minute and opening the
scoring with a well struck point from distance. This
was followed up by points from play from Chris
Murphy (3rd) and Ciaran Conway (5th) again following
neat passages of play involving midfield, half-backs
and half-forwards. Annaclone registered their only
point from play in the 11th minute when their centre
half-back broke forward at pace to slot the ball
sweetly over the bar. The Carryduff response was
immediate with four points in quick succession from
Andy Moorehead (11th) Sean Molloy (14th), Conall
Early(15th) and Stephen Kelly (17th). The midfield
pairing of Tony McMahon and Ciaran Conway were
dominating play and breaking forward at will. Good
movement in all areas of the pitch was contributing
to a excellent first half display. The first half
scoring was completed by Sean Molloy with a point
from play from distance in the 23rd minute. The only
concern was that five scoring opportunities went a
begging in the closing 10 minutes of the first half.
Half-time score Carryduff 0-08 Annaclone 0-01
Carryduff realised that Annaclone would come out
fighting in the second half. Indeed within one
minute Annaclone struck goal when they run at pace
at the Carryduff defence and slotted the ball past
the approaching keeper Cormac McCrory. A youthful
Carryduff were naturally shook by the goal and took
time to settle. Andy Moorehead got the settling
score with a point from play in the 5th minute.
Annaclone replied with a point in the 11th minute.
In the 13th minute Carryduff lost possession in the
Annaclone half and again quick movement resulted in
the second Annaclone goal. When this was followed up
with a point from a 20metre free, the Carryduff
seven point lead at half-time had suddenly
evaporated to the minimum solitary score. However
once under the cosh the Carryduff character was to
shine through. Hard hitting tackles and well timed
runs by Conor Brennan, Paul O’Neill and Michael
Graham ensured Carryduff stayed in front. Dermy
Magorian and Conall Doherty also stuck to the job at
hand and shadowed their men well. Meanwhile
man-of-the-match Tony McMahon continued to work hard
in the middle of the park, before being switched to
centre half forward. Half-time sub for Sean Molloy,
new-comer Paul Kelly, took over at midfield and ably
assisted Ciaran Conway (Captain). Up stepped
debutant Conall Early who struck two points in
succession. The first was a finely executed 13 metre
free (17th), the second a well struck point from
play (18th). Annaclone replied with a point in the
24th minute from play. Carryduff then got the break
they needed to kill the game. The other debutant
Darragh Brownlee received the ball in the danger
area and led the ball off to Stephen Kelly who
popped up to bury the ball in the back of the net
(25th). Stephen had got his just rewards for
continuing to shoot despite failing to find the
range on several occasions. Annaclone stuck to the
task well and finished their scoring with two points
from play. A tense finish ensued with Cormac McCrory
coming to the rescue with a decisive save at close
range from the a driven shot at goal.
In the end it was another satisfying day at the
office for Carryduff Reserves. An excellent display
of team-work, determination and grit from a team
which combined youthfulness and experience to
achieve a well deserved victory.
Thanks to all who answered us in the hour of need.
We look forward to seeing you all at Kilclief
tomorrow night and then at training on Wednesday.
Next match away to Louginisland on Bank Holiday
Monday.
