U14 Ladies Win Memorable Championship Semi
Final Encounter
Carryduff and local rivals Bredagh played out
a classic encounter in their semi-final championship
clash at Saul on Saturday afternoon.
The game lived up to all expectations between
the county league champions Carryduff and the
runners-up. Carryduff started the stronger and
their credentials as champions was evident.
Bredagh were on the back foot for most of the
first half as Carryduff placed their defence
under huge pressure. However Bredagh Gaels were
determined and the defence fought with dogged
grit, competing fiercely for every ball and
thwarting several attacks.
Undeterred Carryduff continued with their characteristic
tight hand-passing game which paid off with
excellent scores from Aoife O’Reilly,
Ciara Crosbie, Fiona McCauley and Niamh Hughes.
However on occasions Carryduff’s final
ball and scoring opportunities could have been
much better. Indeed with all the possession
and first half dominance the Carryduff forwards
had eleven wides.
Half time Carryduff 1-05 Bredagh 0-02
Carryduff were rocked as Bredagh with the wind
in their favour started the second half at a
blistering pace. Bredagh’s Ciara Maguire
who had a quiet first half displayed her undoubted
talent and tormented Carryduff’s defence
scoring an excellent goal and created opportunities
for others to convert. Bredagh’s Sarah
Montgomery and Rachael Goldsmith were also superb.
After ten minutes Carryduff’s narrow
lead had been diminished and both teams were
level. With the momentum swinging towards Bredagh
Carryduff had to dig deep and began to claw
themselves back into the game. Carryduff reorganised
with Hannah Magorrian tasked to stem Ciara Maguire’s
pace which she did to very good effect. Aoife
O’Reilly played a captain’s role
and supported by her half forwards, the mid
field and half backs turned the screw on the
Bredagh defence once again.
End to end play from then until the end of
the game enthralled the travelling support.
Carryduff’s goalkeeper Katy McCann made
several vital saves while Aoife O’Reilly
finished the scoring with two brilliantly executed
goals and points.
With heroes all over the field Niamh Hughes,
Niamh Lenaghan, Aoife O’Reilly, Emma Boyle,
Meghan Doherty and Hannah Magorrian’s
overall performances were worthy of note.
The game was played in good spirit and both
teams were a credit to their clubs.

Seniors Down
The seniors campaign ended with relegation to
Division III after the defeat to Ballyholland
on Friday evening.
Carryduff were holding their own in the first
half, a point down at 0-03 to 0-02 and levelled
the game shortly after the break but the relentless
injuries that have afflicted the team all season
continued with four players all suffering serious
injuries in the game.
Shane O'Neill left in an ambulance with a dislocated
shoulder, Ronan McLaughlin suffered a broken
collar bone and both Barry O'Neill and Andy
Moorehead had broken fingers.
With the disruption to the team, Ballyholland
ran out easy winners to condemn Carryduff.
The squad now have to regroup for an away game
against Shamrocks on Friday evening.
