Duff U14 Ladies Represent Their County At
All Ireland Blitz
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Down U14 ladies travelled to Mullingar (West
Meath) to compete in the All Ireland football
blitz tournament on Saturday 10th May 2008.
Carryduff ladies were very well represented
with Orla McKay, Emily Duffy, Fiona McCauley,
Ciara Crosbie and Meghan Doherty on the panel.
Unfortunately Jessica Foy was unavailable to
join the panel.
First up was County Clare. Both teams met two
years previously at the U12 All Ireland blitz.
On that occasion Clare won. However it was Down's
turn to take the honour and in a competitive
but enjoyable encounter beat Clare 1-05 - 1-00.
In round 2 the ladies were just too strong for
County Meath and ran out comfortable winners
1-09 -1-01.
One of the Blitz favourites, County Cork, were
Down's next opponents. In a hotly contested
but surprising low scoring encounter both sides
battled very hard. Both attacked and defended
well with Cork finishing the first half on top,
two points to the good. The ladies had to dig
deep in the second half and to their credit
dominated most of it, but unfortunately could
not capitalise on the greater possession. They
squandered several attempts on goal and should
have without doubt won the game outright. However,
to Cork's relief the honours were shared: 0-03
- 0-03.
The encounter took its toll on the ladies, which
Roscommon exploited in the next game. Down played
well but their opponents were fresher and sharper
on the ball and finished the half 1-02 to 0-00.
Down rallied in the second half and immediately
placed Roscommon on the back foot, but unluckily
could not convert their chances. Roscommon desperately
held on to claim victory: 1-03 - 0-00.
Roscommon were the section winners with Down
and Cork in joint second place. However, Down
subsequently and deservedly beat Cork in an
exciting penalty shoot out to claim a semi final
encounter against Sligo.
The penalty shoot out was hugely entertaining
and the star of the show was Down's goalkeeper
Aisleen Gribben (Burren). She made four fantastic
saves to the delight of everyone.
With a new lease of life the ladies started
the semi final encounter at blistering pace
taking an early lead. They continued to compete
well and were only one point behind at half-time.
Unfortunately Sligo, the eventual tournament
winners, took full command of the second half
and ended Down's tournament with an outstanding
performance resulting in a comprehensive victory.
Down 1-05 - Sligo 5-09.

Under 10 Hurlers Win Local Derby
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The under 10 Hurlers continued their excellent
start to the season with a win over local neighbours
Breda at Cherryvale playing fields on Saturday.
The final score was Carryduff 2-09 Bredagh 2-00.
Played under Go Games rules both managers rotated
their players during the match to give all the
young hurlers a game.
Ronan Beatty was once again outstanding in midfield
for Carryduff , he scored some great points
from all areas of the pitch. This was no small
feat when you consider the small size of the
goals used in Go Games. Carryduff dominated
the midfield during the first quarter; Daire
Magorrian, Donal Og Rooney and Daniel McCartan
were particularly impressive during this early
phase of the game.
The second quarter was a much more even affair
and Bredagh opened their scoring with a well-taken
goal. The Carryduff defence however stood firm
during a sustained period of Breda pressure.
The defenders Eoin Maguire, Gareth Henderson,
Peter Andrews and Thomas Mooney soon had the
Breda forwards under control. Goalkeeper Conor
McLornan played well throughout the game.
In the final quarter the Carryduff forwards
Aaron Lynch, Daniel McGrath, Conor Dunlop, Seamus
O Reilly and Eoin Rooney came to the fore. Eoin
and Seamus played particularly well in this
their debut match for the under 10's.
Well done to all the boys!

Double Success for Minor Hurlers
Monday's victory over Warrenpoint not only saw
the Club's promotion to the Division 1 league
but also means that the minors go directly into
the semi final of the 'B' Championship later
this year.
The Warrenpoint win was achieved through an
all round performance combining hard working
team play with excellent spells of flowing skilful
hurling.
Warrenpoint had opened the game well and had
Carryduff on the backfoot with three opening
points from their county player, Micheal 'Meatsy'
Cunningham. Despite this pressure, Carryduff
didn't panic and Darragh Goodwin opened the
home account with a long range point which was
quickly added to by Declan Doherty. Mark McConville
levelled the scores from a tight angle and then
Carryduff's own county star Doherty began to
torment the Point defence.
Pinpoint accuracy from frees and outstanding
scoretaking from play saw Declan hitting 1-4
without reply. Just before halftime, Eoin Conway
broke through for another point leaving the
halftime score Carryduff 1-8 Warrenpoint 0-3.
Warrenpoint had the first score of the second
half before Carryduff again settled into scoring
mode with points from Aaron McEneaney (0-2)
and a further three points from man of the match
Declan Doherty.
Although the home team were stretching their
lead,Warrenpoint were not prepared to lose the
promotion slot without a fight and proceeded
to notch up five points from frees. At that
stage, a goal might have made all the difference
to the Point fightback but the Carryduff defence
held firm with rock solid displays from Conor
Turner, Conor Beattie and keeper Danny Mc Glinchey.
Having witheld the pressure, Carryduff went
back on the attack and added a late point to
leave the final score Carryduff 1-14 Warrenpoint
0-09.
The only sour note of an otherwise excellent
evening was the injury to Conal Early who had
himself turned in his usual assured performance
at centre half back. The rest of the squad wish
Conal all the best in his recovery.

Double Disappointment For Carryduff Footballers
Both the u14 and minor footballers suffered
disappointment on Wednesday evening.
The u14 boys finished runners-up in the Down
Féile Final in Burren. After the postponement
of the Féile last weekend, Carryduff
and Rostrevor had to play their semi final match
to see who would play Glenn in the final.
Rostrevor made all the early running and had
a comfortable 0-09 to 0-02 lead at the interval.
The lead was extended shortly after the restart
to 8 points but the Carryduff lads dug deep
and pulled out 3 goals in the last five minutes
to win the tie by a single point.
The Final proved to be a one sided affair as
Carryduff had expended so much of their energy
in their earlier game. Glenns' fresh legs helped
them to a 1-10 to 0-04 victory and the privilege
of representing Down in the All Ireland Final.
The Minor footballers suffered heartbreak at
the hands of Bredagh in the Championship. A
late Bredagh goal, with the tie levelled, saw
the Ormeau boys take the plaudits.
