The Undefeated
Carryduff’s young hurlers were victorious
with four wins out of four matches in the Portaferry
tournament on Saturday. Following on from their
historic victory over Portaferry last Saturday,
this week’s success has confirmed the
teams’ progress this year.
The boys got off to a great start in the tournament
with a 4-06 to 2-02 win over Ballycran. Conor
O’Reilly opened the scoring with a fine
goal early in the first half. The team captain
Ronan Beatty led from the front and was involved
in the thick of the action from the start of
the game. He scored 3-02 of the Carryduff total.
Daire Magorrian’s excellent blocking and
tackling was a feature of the game and he topped
of a great display with two fine long-range
points. The Carryduff defence were under severe
pressure during periods of the second half but
held out well for a memorable win.
Our second match was against a very young Ballyvarley
side. Carryduff won by a scoreline of 4-08 to
1-02. The spectators were treated to a little
bit of McCartan magic on no fewer than three
occasions when young Daniel scored three great
goals. Eoin Maguire, Daniel McGrath, Eoin Rooney
and Gareth Henderson also played very well in
this game. Eoin Maguire has made the fullback
position his own following his superb display
against Portaferry last week. His high catch
during that game would have graced any senior
county game. Donal Og Rooney and Ciaran O’Callaghan
were rock solid in the halfback line throughout
the tournament.
The third match was a rematch against last week’s
opponents Portaferry and it was a very close
affair from the throw in. The fact that the
first half ended scoreless gives an indication
of how evenly matched the two teams were. Ronan
Beatty opened the scoring for Carryduff at the
start of the second half with two well-taken
points. Ciaran O’Callaghan added a third
to settle the Carryduff nerves before Ronan
Beatty put the game beyond Portaferry with a
late goal. Man of the match in this encounter
was however not in the attack but Tom Mooney
who was outstanding in the fullback line.
The final score was 1-03 to 0-00 for Carryduff.
The final game of the tournament was against
the only other unbeaten team on the day Newry
Shamrocks . Carryduff took control of midfield
early in the game and broke the young Newry
team’s resistance with some excellent
long-range points early in the game. Our goalkeeper
Aiden McManus made a significant contribution
to our success on the day with the quality of
his well-placed puck outs and some quality saves
. Overall this was a great team effort throughout
the day.
Many thanks to the Portaferry club for organising
this festival of juvenile hurling and for their
generous hospitality.

much progress they have made in only ten weeks.
A big crowd of family and friends were treated
to a fantastic display of local talent in what
surely has to become a regular fixture on the
Club calendar.
A big thank you goes to the class tutors, Fiona
Loughlin, Stephen Downey, Claire Adams &
Stephen Adams for their dedication and enthusiasm
which made the classes so enjoyable for their
pupils.
A special thanks has to go to the Coordinators
Fionnuala Leneghan and Anamarie Magorrian who
kickstarted the classes on behalf of the Club
and of course all 75 pupils for helping to raise
the profile of culture within the Club.

Boys Under 12 A Footballers Cruise in Castlewellan
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After going five wins no draws no loses in the
first half of the season and topping the league
table by three points with a game in hand, the
Carryduff lads travelled to Castlewellan with
intentions on keeping their unblemished record
intact.
Captain Ruairí Boyle winning the toss
chose to play with the wind in the first half,
and with aid of this stiff breeze Carryduff
went to work to make it six wins out of six.
with some brilliant fielding and a greater hunger
to win possession Carryduff began as they intended
to continue by overwhelming their opponents
and playing at times some jaw dropping football,
with Connor Rooney, Michael Keane and James
Guinness who scored five first half points all
moving and linking up well. Our right wing back
Ciaran Dunlop must of ate his Wheat-o-bix in
the morning because he had energy to burn making
long surging runs all game long scoring 0-03
on the day, and by the time half time rolled
around Carryduff were in a comfortable position
5-16 to no score.
At the start of the second half Rory Maguire
who was playing as tenacious as ever scoring
1-01, and Aaron Coburn contributing 2-01 of
his own made way for Joseph Hewitt and Jack
McKeown determined to add their influence on
the game, and that they did with Joseph working
non-stop to win ball and Jack scoring a peach
of a goal. With our mid-field dominating from
start to finish, our star keeper and all our
backs alleviating what limited danger that fell
their way Carryduff saw out the remainder of
the match scoring 3-05 in the second half. On
the day that was the red hot boot award surely
must go to our left half forward Patrick McConnell
scoring an impressive 2-03.
If I am to be picky, and I will be picky the
only negative would be the large amount of wides
that we accumulated on the day, we must try
and improve on this and stay focused because
we have a tough test ahead of us this Sunday
when Bryansford travel to Carryduff to avenge
the loss to us at the beginning of the season.
Well done to all lads that travelled and we
will see you "ALL" on Wednesday at
training.

U12 Ladies Suffer St Galls Defeat
Carryduff were slow to start and were shaky
against a skilful St Galls team. The visitors
scored 2 goals helped partly by the hard dry
ground which caused the ball to bounce hard
beating Carryduff’s goal keeper. Amy Foy
scored 1 goal for Carryduff helping keep the
home within touch of the visitors.
The second period of the game heralded the return
of a skilful and determined Carryduff side.
Tighter marking, excellent hand passing and
attacking helped the home team score 3 goals
and 3 points.
Katie Magorrian took full advantage of opportunities
when then arose notching 2 goals and 1 point.
The defence kept St Galls to one point in this
excellent period of play for Carryduff.
The final period saw a further change of fortunes
for Carryduff with St Galls showing their abilities
and their sustained attacking helped them score
3 goals and 5 points.
Despite not being able to score in this period
Carryduff continued to show determination and
fought until the final whistle.
Final score 4-03 to 5-05
