Castlewellan Notes 22 April 2007

Naomh Maolmhoig Caislean A Mhuilinn

(St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan)

Club Notes for week-ending 28th April

Club history was made on Saturday when Castlewellan fielded a camogie team at U12 level for the first time. Attical travelled to the town for this opening league game.

Playing into a strong breeze in the first half did not hinder captain Primrose Dillon who found the back of the net in the opening five minutes. Attical quickly replied with two excellent goals from play despite the best defensive efforts of Finola Rice and Ciara Gibson.

Second half pressure from Castlewellan’s Anna Rogan combined with Padraigin Hawkins and Aoife Keown enabled Catherine Collins to level the scoreboard.

An excellent all round Castlewellan performance enabled these inexperienced newcomers to secure a draw and their first point of the season.

Team: Sinead Sweeney, Holly Carville, Finola Rice, Ciara Gibson, Padraigin Hawkins, Katie Savage, Gemma Greenan, Aoife Keown, Catherine Collins, Primrose Dillon, Nicola McCabe

Anna Rogan, Niambh Burns, Clare Trainor, Alyson Morgan, Louise McCabe, Caitlin Burns

Megan Murdock.

Next U12 Match: Saturday 28th April at home to Ballyholland.

Feile Na Gael: Castlewellan’s two Féile encounters both ended in defeat despite Castlewellan’s youthful and inexperienced team giving brave performances and showing great spirit and determination.

In the first match, a slick moving Portaferry side took an early lead and never looked back to grab a comfortable win despite the finest efforts of goalkeeper Sinead Sweeney who made some excellent saves whilst under severe pressure.

In the second match Ballyholland were able to replicate Portaferry’s success.

These matches will provide Castlewellan experience as they travel to these Ards clubs in the U14 league campaign.

Team: Shannon Rice (captain), Rosealeen Rice, Sarah Jane Collins, Mary O’Higgins, Amy Rice, Louise McCabe, Clare Trainor, Padraigin Hawkins, Finola Rice, Aoife Keown, Katie Savage, Alyson Morgan, Catherine Collins, Primrose Dillon, Ciara Gibson, Sinead Sweeney.
