It’s Juvenile Tournament time in Castlewellan

St Malachy’s G.A.C. Castlewellan is currently making final preparations for its annual 9 a-sides juvenile football tournaments. This year’s boys and girl’s 9 a-sides will take place on Saturday 4t August and this year marks the 12th annual juvenile tournament, which consists of two 9 a-side competitions at U.12 level run concurrently at St Malachy’s Park.

The Boys’ competition consists of 16 teams who compete for the “Edward Toner Memorial Cup” and individual trophies, while the 8 teams in the girls’ competition will be competing for the “May Steele Memorial Cup” and individual trophies.

This years competitions have attracted teams from Antrim as well as from all parts of Co Down. In the boys’ competition holders Bryansford return to defend their title and will face strong opposition from St Johns & St. Galls Belfast and the many local clubs. Mourne is represented in the competition by former winners An Riocht, and Longstone, while, Annaclone, Burren, and Saval will represent South Down and East Down will have, Bryansford, Loghinisland, St Johns, Carryduff, Kilcoo and the host club Castlewellan participating.

Teams will be divided into sections of four and will play each other on a round-robin basis with the winners and runners-up in each section progressing to the quarterfinals of the main competition and third and fourth placed teams going into a Shield competition.

The girls’ competition also promises to be a close affair with last years winners Newry Bosco will be going for back to back titles facing stiff opposition from St Galls, Castlewellan, Bryansford, Downpatrick, Carryduff, Bright, Bredagh and Annaclone.

As with the boys’ competition teams will be divided into sections of four and will play each other on a round-robin basis with the winners and runners-up progressing to the semi-finals and third and fourth entering the Shield competition.

All games are scheduled to be played in St. Malachy’s Park with the first games beginning at 11.00am and the Girls’ finals scheduled for 3.40pm and the final of the Boys’ competitions for 4.00pm.

As in last years competition there will a “Player of the Tournament” for both competitions.
