Castlewellan Club Notes - Week Ending 26th August 2007

Naomh Maolmhoig Caislean A Mhuilinn
(St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan)

Club Notes for week-ending August 26th

Games: The minor hurlers were unlucky against Carryduff last week in the league and in spite of scoring 3 goals to Carryduff’s 1 goal they eventually lost on a score line of 3.5 to 1.16 for Carryduff. The U14 hurlers also lost to Carryduff while our U16 hurlers had a great win over Kilclief winning 5.6 to 3.7. No such luck for our U16 footballers who also lost heavily to Carryduff while our U14 footballers put on a terrific performance against Downpatrick in St Malachy’s Park beating the hoops 7.24 to Downpatrick’s 3.6. The senior ladies started the week well with a great attacking game against Annaclone and Lisa Morgan undoubtedly the player of the match notching up a personal tally of 5. goals and two points. The town ladies had the game in the bag at half time scoring 7 goals and 3 point to Annaclone’s 2 points and another 2 goals and 8 points followed for the town in the second half leaving the full time score Castlewellan 9.11 to Annaclone’s 1.06. Other town scorers were Kitty Keown (2.03) Paula Clelland (0.3) Joanne Sloan (1.02) Clare Drummy (1.01). Clare’s goal was the best goal of the game with a shot from 35yards. Unfortunately this star performance by our ladies team was not repeated on Saturday past when they met neighbours Bryansford in St Patrick’s Park. With a number of the more experienced players away on holidays, heavy wind and poor pitch conditions our girls didn’t perform and were beaten 2.10 to 1.05.

Our senior men overcame the mighty Bridge on Friday night in St Malachy’s Park with another great team performance, despite Mayobridge scoring a penalty early in the first half. The town kept in front for most of the match and then briefly allowed the bridge to take the lead in the second half after they scored 4 unanswered points to edge one point in front. Towards the end of the game it looked like it might be a draw but the town lads fought back to regain the lead and held out to the final whistle winning this vital game for the town 1.10 to 1.09. Best of luck in the Championship quarter finals against Burren on Sunday in St Patrick’s Park. A great win too for Castlewellan Seconds in the Premier Reserve Football Championship with the town beating Kilclief by 3 points to qualify for the quarter finals. Castlewellan thirds are through to the quarter finals of the reserve championship after a convincing win over neighbours Liatroim last Sunday evening.

Castlewellan’s young camogs hosted Aghaderg in the U12 Camogie Shield Semi Final and this game proved to be a match worth watching, with both teams equally determined to win.

The rain and cold made conditions difficult, but Castlewellan were full of fight and determination and most likely encouraged by the large number of spectators present. Such was the power of the Castlewellan midfield and defence, Aghaderg only had a few chances of scoring in the first half and it was from the midfield that most of Castlewellan’s attacks were launched and there was a constant threat on the Aghaderg goal. At hallf time Aghaderg registered 1 pt to a goal for Castlewellan.

The second half saw an optimistic and resolute Castlewellan side emerge. Displaying excellent skills Castlewellan prevented their opponents from adding to their score whilst managing to convert their own chances into scores with three further goals as they stretched their lead beyond Aghaderg’s grasp. The final score was Castlewellan 4 – 0, Aghaderg 0 – 1.

This was great team performance from the girls especially considering this is their first year registered and playing competitive matches and every single one of them deserve great credit for their efforts as they ran themselves almost to a standstill in St. Malachy’s Park and all played remarkably well.
