1st
Naomh Maolmhoig
Caislean A Mhuilinn
(St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan)
Games: Our U14
footballers put on a star performance in the
meadow on Thursday past against our neighbours
St John’s in the East Down U14 League
scoring 3.09 to St John’s 1.09. (see separate
report) Our U12 camogs continue their winning
streak beating Bredagh 2.0 to no score. Aoife
Keown was Castlewellan’s star performer
and goal scorer in this keenly fought game.
Sunday evening in Hilltown was the time and
venue for the eagerly awaited Championship quarterfinal
encounter between the town and Burren. A quiet
air of confidence that the town could progress
to the semi-finals of the SFC was quickly dispelled
on Sunday evening with a poor all round performance
by the town seniors against Burren at Hilltown.
It was twenty minutes into the first half before
Castlewellan registered their first score when
Geg McCartan but it over the bar from a free
awarded to the town. Castlewellan had missed
3 previous scoring by this stage from frees
and the third from a McCartan free that hit
the upright. By this stage of the game Burren
where leading by 3 minutes and then in the 24th
minute a superb Burren left the score 1.04 to
one solitary point for the town. However the
game was by no means over at this stage and
two town points quickly followed from Finty
McGreevy and Greg McCartan, and a saved goal
shot from Danniel Morgan that the town were
still very much in the game. Damien McGrady
converted another point for the town just on
the half time whistle leaving just one goal
separating both teams.. After such a poor performance
in the first half the town were expected to
rally in the second half but this failed to
materialise with Castlewellan chasing the game
for the rest of the match. With a Burren sending-off
their was an opportunity to capitalize with
the extra man but the town only came within
2 points of a more determined Burren side and
when Aidian Brogan who was playing well in defence
was red carded the writing was on the wall for
the town and hopes of a place in the semi-finals
quickly evaporated. Full time score 1.07 to
0.7 for Burren
Team and scorers Mickey McVeigh, Stephen trainor,
Ruairi McArdle,, Aidian Brogan (red carded 23
mins into second half),, Bernard McAleenan,
Kevin Duffin, Liam Lennon, Fintan McGreevy(0.3),
Mark Stratton, Aidian Burns, Gregory McCartan
(0.2), Damian McGrady(0.2), Finbar Rice, Daniel
Morgan, Cahal Crilly. Subs used Colm Flanagan
for Cahal Crilly who went off injured after
19 mins, Ciaran McCabe for Colm Flanagan, Paul

Rice. Best for Castlewellan was Finty McGreevy.
The senior ladies had another great win on Saturday
night when they beat Bredagh 2,07 to 0.12in
a closely fought and hard game. Aine keary was
solid in defence, as was Clare Drummey playing
center half back. Mid-field was dominated by
Bronagh Quinn and Karen McMullan and another
great performance by Joanne Sloanne. Up front
Paula Clelland was the star putting away two
goals for the town and another great game for
Lisa Morgan who scored 3points, Kitty Keown
who scored 4 points and Lisa Morgan with 3 points.
Another great team effort and all our hopes
for championship victory now rests with the
ladies.
