Castlewellan Club Notes - 6th August 2007
Naomh Maolmhoig Caislean A Mhuilinn
(St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan)
Club Notes for week-ending
August 11th
Vhi Cul camp: A great week
of juvenile GAA sport in St Malachy’s
Park commenced with the Vhi Cul camp summer
coaching school on Monday 30th July to Friday
3rd August. Five great summer days without any
rain for a change and 100 local children expertly
coached in the skills of hurling camogie and
football. Full credit to the GAA, in association
with Vhi Healthcare, in producing this nationally
co-ordinated programme, to encourage children
to learn and develop sporting and life-skills
by participating in Gaelic Games, in a fun,
non-competitive environment.
Edward Toner / May Steels
Juvenile Competitions: On Saturday 5th August
24 boys and girls teams from Down and Antrim
competed in St Malachy’s 12th annual Edward
Toner and May Steele memorial Cup and Shields
held in St Malachy’s Park. The winners
of the Edward Toner cup were Saval while Castlewellan
girls lifted the May Steele cup. Girls player
of the tournament trophy went to Aoife Keown
while the boy’s player of the tournament
award went to Saval’s Patrick Havern.
(See juvenile tournament report for full details
of competition). Thanks to everyone who turned
out and helped with our annual tournament with
a special word of thanks to the referees and
to competition organiser Marty McClean.
Go Games: To finish off a great
week of juvenile sport our under 8 boys competed
in the Go-Games at Mayobridge on Sunday and
unfortunately the weather didn’t look
down so kindly on our youngest footballers but
nevertheless they competed valiantly in all
four games.
At the other end of the scale our senior footballers
recent two wins brings them creeping back up
the table just clear of the relegation zone
on 18 points, with just 3 games left to play
we need to be certain of victory in each game
to avoid the dreaded play-offs. It’s championship
time again and best off luck to our seniors
who will meet An Riocht on Saturday in St Patrick’s
Park. Unfortunately our senior hurlers were
knocked out in the first round of the junior
hurling championship last Sunday also in St
Patrick’s Park by a much superior Bredagh
team.
