St Malachy’s GAC appoint
new management team for 2007
St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan have appointed a
number of experienced Club members with a proven
team management record as part of their new Club
Development Plan in the hope of bringing honours
to their Club in the course of the next few
years.
Heading up the senior team management is former
Club Chairman Gerry (Trixie) Dougherty who
managed the 1999 All-Ireland winning Down Minor
team and who more recently in 2005 managed the
Ulster team in San Francisco to their first ever
victory in the All-American Championship. In
2006 he managed the Ulster seconds team which
won the San Francisco Championship also for the
first time.
His co-manager is Danny Keown a former town manager
who co-managed the Club’s last SFC success when
they won back-to-back county titles back in 1994
and 1995.
They will be assisted by former town players Ed
McCartan who has been part of the Club’s senior
team backroom staff for the past ten years and
who now joins the management team as a selector
along with former County star Gregory McCartan
and Barney Cunningham.
Barney Cunningham has already achieved
remarkable success within the Club as an
experienced club coach who also managed the
Ladies senior team to their second County
Championship title in 2005 and more recently in
2006 the Club’s first County MFC title in 40
years
As well as serving as a selector and coach with
the Club’s senior team Barney will also be
tasked with managing the second team assisted by
his former minor team co-manager Peter McKibben.
As part of the Club’s continuity plan and
linkage between senior 2nd’s and 3rd’Peter
will also manage the Club’s thirds team along
with Colin Laverty.
A player’s
meeting of all adult club players will take
place over the next week or so prior to
commencement of training at which the new set up
will be explained to the players and commitment
sought for the coming playing seasons.
An open
invitation is extended to any players aspiring
to play adult football for St Malachy's GAC
Castlewellan either at senior, second’s or
third's level to a meeting with the
new management team.
The meeting will take place on Saturday 20th
January at 6.00pm sharp in the Clubrooms
Registration essential
The Club Registrar will be present at the
meeting and all players must register on the
night and pay both membership and insurance in
full, without exception.
