Castlewellan Notes 4th July 2007
Naomh Maolmhoig Caislean A Mhuilinn
(St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan)
Club Notes for week-ending July7th
3 great wins
last week for the club’s 3 senior teams. First
win was the hurlers away to Ballygalget last
Wednesday night where they defeated the Ard’s
men by a cracking 6 goals and 5 points to
Ballygalget’s 2 goals and 12 points.
Best for the Town were Neill Johnstone in goals,
Gary Cairns and Raymond Cunningham in defence,
Brendan Mc Cann had a solid game in midfield,
Andy Richie scoring 2 goals for the second game
in succession and big Stevie Rodgers adding a
further two goals, to cap off another good team
performance. Town scorers
Tom Jennings (0-02), Cormac Mc Cabe (0-02),
Ciaran Mc Cabe(1-00), Neil Mc Veigh (1-00), 14)
Steven Rodgers (2-01), Andrew Richie (2-00)
On Friday night Ciaran McCabe was robbed of a
great goal opportunity with the senior
footballers when a vicious Liatroim tackle took
him down in the goalmouth in the dying seconds
of the game. The resulting penalty awarded to
the town was simply tapped over the bar by
penalty taker Kevin Duffin to add to the town’s
final tally of 2.11 to Liatroim’s 1.06 in this
Ac senior league local derby game. This was a
solid town performance in spite of too many
wide’s with great individual performances from
Gregory McCartan and Finty McGreavey in mid
field while up front Shay McVeigh, Cahal Crilly
and Liam McKibben were outstanding. In defence
Trainor, McArdle and Duffin were in excellent
form. Castlewellan scorers Liam McKibben 1.0,
Finty McGreevy 0.3, Shay McVeigh 1.1, Cahal
Crilly 0.1, Kevin Duffin 0.2, Greg McCartan 0.2
Paul Hanna 0.1, ciaran McCabe 0.1
The bouquet of the week however must go to our
senior ladies on Wednesday night when they took
on neighbours Bryansford in St Malachy’s Park
and confounded the critics by playing out of
their skins to snatch victory by two points on
a score line of 2.13 to 2.11. Fifteen minutes
into the first half it was a different story and
it looked like the ford would deliver a
humiliating defeat to the town girls as they led
by 2 goals and six points to no score for
Castlewellan.. However star performances from
Lisa Morgan (1.02) Kitty Keown (0.6), and Paula
Cleland (1.02) brought the town back into the
game and in every sector of the field
Castlewellan began to dig in and play some great
football. Aine Keary was also outstanding as
were the Quinn sisters not long back from
foreign travels. Dierdre Quinn scored a
magnificent point following a 21 yard solo run
towards the end of the game to put the town in
front and another town point secured the victory
they deserved. In defence Leann Owens starred
for Castlewellan.
Our U16 footballers had hard luck in the AC
league fixture against Burren last Tuesday
scoring two great goals and seven points in a
game they should have won but had to settle for
a draw with Burren’s score of 13 points.
The U12 girls had another great win on Thursday
night scoring a total 8 goals and 8 points. Hard
luck to our minor hurlers who drop out of the
Championship beaten by a superior Bredagh side
on a score line of 4.11 to Castlewellan’s 2,0.
The U16 hurlers however had a great win over
Carryduff on Friday night beating them by 8.08
to just 0.2 points
Clare and Rory Fund.
Well done to the McAlinden and Steele families
for all their fund raising efforts for the
Mourne Underwater Search volunteers in the wake
of their own family tragedies. They handed over
a cheque in access of £30,000 at their final
fundraising fuction in Castlewellan GAC
Clubrooms on Saturday night.
