Castlewellan Notes 28th June 2007
Naomh Maolmhoig Caislean A Mhuilinn
(St Malachy’s GAC Castlewellan)
Club Notes for week-ending June 30th
Games round up. Our
senior footballers put up a dismal performance
against Burren in St Malachy’s Park on Monday
18th June, starting off well but all too quickly
descending into what must have been one of the
worst displays ever from a Castlewellan senior
team. Too many missed chances and poor ball
distribution may go some way to explaining why
this team were unable to register one single
score in the final forty minutes of the game.
Final score Castlewellan 3.4 to Burren's 1.13.
What a turn around only four days later when
they met Burren In St Malachy’s Park putting in
an inspired performance to register our first
home win this season beating Burren 0.16 to 0.9
Some tough talking from management or soul
searching by the players themselves seemed to
have done the trick and lets hope they can put
in the same quality performance for the
remainder of the season. Good to see Ciaran
McCabe making a come back and scoring a point
within minutes of coming on. Our seconds and
thirds team both had two great wins on Sunday
beating respectively Loughinisland 5.5 to 0.6
and Drumaness 1.15 to 3.06. No such luck for our
senior ladies who were well beaten by Clonduff
in the league on Saturday evening.
A
great performance however for our U16
footballers in the AC U16 League on Tuesday
night coming from 5 points down to draw level
with Burren 2.7 to Burren’s 13 points. This team
showed great spirit with their gutsy
performance.
Our senior hurlers meanwhile made up for their
recent losing ways with a brilliant display of
hurling against much fancied Ballyvarley on
Tuesday 19th June in the AC senior
Division 2 game. Castlewellan were by far the
more superior team and won by a convincing
3-12 to Ballyvarley’s 1-9. Solid performance by
Neil Jonstone in goals, Andrew Richie and
Michael Blanney caught the eye in attack,
overall a very good team performance playing in
difficult weather conditions in the second half.
Hopefully this can be built upon for the
championship. Castlewellan scorers Martin óg
Keown (0-01), Brendan Mc Cann (0-01), Tom
Jennings (0-03), Michael Blanney (1-01), Neil
Mc Veigh (0-02), Cormac Mc Cabe (0-03), Andrew
Richie (2-01).
Not such a good performance by the minor
footballers against RGU in the ACML on
Wednesday June 20th loosing by 1 goal
on a score line of 2.9 to 1.9 which was a big
turn around from a week previously when our
minors played so convincingly in the
Championship opening round beating Ballymartin
by 5 points. Hopefully their winning ways will
return in time for the second round of the
Championship when they meat Burren in St
Malachy’s Park on Wednesday July 4th.
Both the U12 boys and the U12 girls were unlucky
at the weekend particularly the young girls who
put in a great performance at the Carryduff
tournament to be beat narrowly by the host team
in the final. The young lads meanwhile went down
to neighbours Kilcoo on Sunday.
Tough luck for our galliant U14 who were knocked
out of the Championship
in a
entertaining local derby to a physically
stronger and more determined St.John’s. From the
throw-in St.John’s showed their determination to
take the game to the home side and quickly moved
into the lead with several well-taken scores.
Not to be outdone Castlewellan settled and drew
level through excellent points from C.Corrigan
and B.Cumiskey and a stunning goal from J.
O’Neill. Playing some great football
Castlewellan attacked but failed to make use of
a number of chances to take a commanding lead.
Just before the break St.John’s got back into
the game when they worked the ball along the end
line and despite the best efforts of the
Castlewellan defence the ball ended up in the
back of the net. Half time Castlewellan 1-5
St.John’s 1-7
The second half
started at a hectic pace as both sides fought to
get on top. Castlewellan soon equalised and
J.O’Neill put them in lead with a superb second
goal. B.Cumiskey, J. O’Neill, S.McCombe and
M.McCartan fought hard to stem the St.John’s
attack but once again St.John’s rallied to
equalise and finished the stronger with 4 well
taken points.
Overall this was
an excellent game of football and the scores
taken by both teams did justice to the hours of
preparation and practice being input at this
level.
Castlewellan
will learn from this and benefit in the long run
as their strength and skills develop. Final
Score Castlewellan 2-9 St.John’s 2-13

For the third
week in succession Castlewellan entered a team
in the An Riocht tournament. This week it was
the turn of the under 14 squad who participated
and entered two teams, in order to allow the
full squad benefit from the day out and the
experience of meeting some different
opposition. Based on a suggestion from Aidan
Dornan the squad split in two using their usual
positions as a method to divide into teams (odd
& even numbers). Ben and Laurence took a team
each assisted by Thomas Rice & Conor Rea. Both
teams progressed to the Shield competition and
Ben’s team only beaten at the semi-final stage
in extra time by a freak goal from midfield by
St.Teresa’s Belfast who went on to contest the
final with Saul who defeated Laurence’s team by
a goal at the quarter final stage. The
competition threw up a number of interesting
factors for the future as B.McVeigh & J.O’Neill
both played well in goal and M.Cunningham &
B.Cumiskey emerged top scorers for their
respective teams. Congratulations to all who
participated and many thanks to Danny Rice for
arranging the payment of fees and transport for
teams.
